Turbo Help

I have a Garret Turbo and during the install of the Tymar intake we observed that the comp wheel vanes are bent/chipped. I have pretty decent mechanical skills, but not a whole lot of time and not a whole lot of money. Should I rebuild the turbo with a kit from someone (ie Rons Turbo Service) OR replace with a remanufactured turbo (if so, should I go to the 1.0 spooling) OR should I have a mechanic do the rebuild? I will have a week coming for "vacation," so the time might not be too much of an issue. I am just looking for sage advice, so anything that will help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Sorry no easy answers here. I've heard the rebuilds are not that hard, but...Do you tow horses? (they're heavy), Depends on what you want to do with it...could just run it till it gets bad. Shouldn't get much worse once the tymar is on.

l84aropin -- If you attempt the rebuild yourself, here's an excellent article to help you: Turbocharger Removal & Rebuild.

I would only recommend the 1.0 housing for the stock turbo if you have an intercooler to help with the EGTs. The 1.0 housing will give you faster spool-up (acceleration) but you'll lose some of the top end.

Cost-wise, you may even be able to buy a rebuilt turbocharger on eBay to replace yours.

Cheers from Claremore, OK!
Dave

Bought a rebuilt from Ron's Turbo Service. It will be here on Monday. I think I will be having some quality time with my truck... I think I am going to try to install it.

It isn't a huge deal man. I rebuilt mine with one of Ron's kits. You mentioned the compressor wheel is chipped up and bent, why no just replace it?

Does your turbo shaft have in/out or side-to-side play? If not, save the rebuild kit. Just put a new compressor wheel in it.

The hardest part is getting the bottom right flange nut off, and the rear right pedestal bolt.

Once you get past that, it's cake.
