Variable 10k question

Excuse my ignorance but I can't seem to find the variable potentiometer I need at radio shack. Does anyone have part numbers for the pot and the relay for the idle validation switch?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have done the basic 10k but I want to uprgrade. I also have no idea how to wire it all with the relay.

Re: Variable 10k question

Hi Darth,

with respect to the potentiometer, almost any 10K pot that will physically fit in your mod will do. There are a lot of different styles of potentiometers, but all of them are just a resistor that changes in resistance as you either turn the knob as in a radio volume comtrol, or turn a adjustment screw to set an adjustment. There are only two basic parameters for a potentioneter. These are the total resistance of the potentiometer, in this case 10K, or ten thousand Ohms, and the amount of power that the pot can handle without overheating. For this mod, although I do not remember rhe specifics, I think that only small levels of power are involved. Therefore, any pot that measures 10,000 ohms will work as it does not hurt to be able to handle more power than necessary. If it does not get too hot you are ok.

Pots have three terminals, These connect to either end of the resistor element inside the pot, and the total resistance of the pot can be measured across these terminals (Get a small cheap voltmeter that also measures ohms, Radio Shack, Home Depot, Lowes, Etc. should be 10/15 Bux max) The third terminal will vary in resistance as you turn the knob. Just hook the ohmmeter leads to any two terminals of the pot. The usual convention for circular metal cased pots is for the center terminal to be the variable output. When wiring the unit into the circuit, it will work ok as long as the variable output is wired to the correct point. The two outside connections on the pot will determine whether you turn the knob clockwise or counterclockwise to "turn it up".

Hope this helps. If Radio Shack dont have one, try a electronic surplus store or Ebay. Good Luck

Regards,

Re: Variable 10k question

Thanks for the info. I don't know much about electronics, but I'm tryin to learn and I don't wanna screw up the truck.

I just want to say that the folks on this site are so helpful. I'm proud to be a member and I only hope that I can someday be as helpful as all of you continue to be to me.

Re: Variable 10k question

There is one other parameter of interest on a pot. That is the taper or how much the resistance varies with rotation of the shaft. The two common tapers are audio, which is logarithmic or very non linear, and linear. The linear taper is the best for the variable 10k application. You will want a fixed resistor in series with the pot so that the resistance can't go too low. I use a 5.6k fixed resistor in series with a 10k linear pot.

Re: Variable 10k question

Thanks for all the help...but I'm still cofused about wiring the pot and inline resistor into the reed relay? and into the idle validation switch.

Anyone have a wiring diagram?

Im gonna just suck it up and buy exhaust and a 6 pos chip eventually but cant stop fiddling with things. I have yet to see one puff of smoke
