vibration after dana 60 coversion

Has anyone experienced a vibration from just off idle to 5mph after converting to the dana 60 and raising the rear?
I have a vibration that I don't remember having before the change over. Thought it might have been my center bearing since it was wore out. Had it replaced and the vibration is still there. Don't think it has anything to do with the front since I got the vibration before installing the front driveshaft. Could it be the change in the angle of the rear axle? The 5.5" blocks changed the angle as not to bind the u-joint.

Re: vibration after dana 60 coversion

Hey Mike, you need to lower the carrier bearing, when I went from 2" blocks to 4" blocks I lowered mine 3\4 and the vibration went away. I used a magnetic angle finder and think I ended up with 11* on both sides of the bearing. Also did you use tapered blocks or straight blocks? I was told to use straight blocks and thats what I used with no issues after I lowered the bearing. Good Luck

Re: vibration after dana 60 coversion

ok guys....... need a little clarification.

I did use angled blocks that I got from Superlift.

What about this 1" square tubing and 5/16 bolts?

School me!!

Or,
were ya'll talkin' about the drive shaft center bearing??
But why would the angled blocks cause a vibration?

Re: vibration after dana 60 coversion

I'm not sure why the angled blocks dont work, someone said something about our two piece driveshafts I guess some trucks use a one piece drive shaft. The 1" square stock and longer bolts is to lower the carrier bearing (center bearing)down to get the proper drive shaft angle.

Re: vibration after dana 60 coversion

Angled lift blocks ALLWAYS mess with something. They are designed to be a cheap way out of lenghtening the driveline. Drivelines have specific requirements for angles to keep them from vibrating. By rotating the pinion up you change the angle thru the rear u-uoint setting up torsional vibes. Flat blocks keep the pinion angle the same as stock.

This angle change issue is the reason the carrier bearing has to be shimmed down when lifting the truck. Restores the angle thru the center u-joint to what it was before the lift.

Re: vibration after dana 60 coversion

You may not need new blocks. I ended up turning mine around so that I get a bit more downward pinion angle. I was having problems with vibrations because the pinion was basically pointing straight towards the carrier bearing. Under load the axle would twist and the pinion would twist upwards causing vibration and possible parts breakage. Just by turning my blocks around, the pinion is now basically pointing straight ahead at rest. This provides a bit if 'preloading' to the axle, so that under load, the axle would rotate up and basically straighten up pointing to the carrier bearing.

Look carefully at your angles and make sure that your total angles equal about 0. This means that if you have a 10* down angle at the carrier, then you should have roughly the same oposite angle at the carrier. Also remember that the pinion will twist upwards under load, so pre-load the pinion angle to allow for this.

Re: vibration after dana 60 coversion

Thanks Radar,
I'll give it a shot.
Cary,
I got your PM and I'll let you know if I need them and can't get them locally. I really need to fix the vibration by Thursday. I'm taking the truck down to Oregon Inlet on Friday for a beach drive.

Radar,
Did you have to drop your center bearing down any?

Re: vibration after dana 60 coversion

Just got done. It seems better ,but I think I'll try and find some 4 or 4.5" blocks to drop the rear a bit just to level the truck just a little more.
