What gear ratio is better

Hi Everyone,

I thinking about ditching my 4.10 and going with some other gears for better mileage. I really do not haul anything over 7000. I have an auto and was thinking 3.45 range.

What do you y'all think?

Thank you,

Re: What gear ratio is better

3:55 is the next "common" gear ratio for these axles and makes good sense for a possible swap (for what you are towing).

Re: What gear ratio is better

yep id go with the 3.55's. mine has 4.10's and i went up to a 35" tire and gained about 1 mpg. unless your towing 10k+ or plan on running big tires, id stick with the 3.55's

Re: What gear ratio is better

yup you can do 355 easy but you'll be in third at any hill, you will not pull it in OD.

Re: What gear ratio is better

I have 355's on my 97 F350 and tow 3-4 tons of feed on a hvy trailer and I run in OD if I am going 65 and it pulls most hills fine. If running slower I drop back out of OD. With what I tow I wish I had 410s but since 4x4 do not want the expense to change over.

Re: What gear ratio is better

I never had to downshift out of OD to go up any hills with my 3.55s, even while towing my Ranger that has a 302 in it.

Re: What gear ratio is better

Ford cars and trucks from 1968 on have an axle code on the Certification Plate that can be used to determine if the vehicle is factory equipped with a limited slip differential. The Certification Plate can be located on the lock face of the left door edge. The plate layouts vary depending on the year, but in every case the axle code section is clearly marked as either "axle" or "ax". Ford axles codes contain one or two character. Any code beginning with a letter (an alpha code) indicates the vehicle is equipped with a limited slip differential EXCEPT as shown below. Some trucks with axle codes that are numbers only (numeric codes) are equipped with limited slip differentials. Please refer to the list below

Re: What gear ratio is better

hills maybe with stock siz tires, try 35's with mountains, not those rolling 400 foot things, we call those bumps, I mean a 45 min 2-9* climb over 2500 ft up, that's a pull.

Re: What gear ratio is better

To shorten the answer re "which do I have now?", on the door tag under "axle" a '35' is 4.10 non-LS, '39' is 3.55 non-LS, C5 is 4.10 LS (posi), C9 is 3.55 LS. Those are about all the options you're likely to find on a pickup.
