What Intercooler options are available?

General searching around here and on the web only turns up three options:

Banks - Expensive
Hypermax - small, expensive, not very available
Retrofit '99-up - Good kits, etc.

Are there any other options not listed, and what sucess/problems have you experienced with any of the options listed, or? My main concern is reducing EGT while towing, but this might provide good info for others as well. Other options that reduce EGT besides intake/exhaust mods would be welcome also. Thanks in advance for any input.

Doug

There is also the ATS kit that I think is easy to install, but uses smaller size tubing. Cheers!

Re: What Intercooler options are available?

There are four main options when it comes to adding an intercooler on our trucks: Banks, Hypermax, ATS, and '99+ Retrofit.

Banks, Hypermax, and ATS all sell kits designed for our trucks. Of these, the Banks kit probably flows/cools the best but, as you said, is very expensive. The next option and just as good, and for a better price, is the Hypermax. The ATS cooler is designed to fit behind the front bumper and may not require as much cutting as either the Banks or Hypermax.

The '99+ retrofit is a much cheaper option and with the GTS Motorsports kit readily available, it eliminates the need for custom fabrication.

If you are going for maximum cooling (and cost) the Hypermax Tapercore intercooler is the only way to go. This is designed for the '99+ Super Duties and has to be modified a bit to fit in our trucks but it can be done.

All of these intercoolers do their job just fine so it really boils down to how good a job they do on your pocketbook.

Cheers from Orlando, FL!

Re: What Intercooler options are available?

The 6 liter retrofit isn't a bad job either, right? Some good talk about that a while ago but haven't heard anything recently.

Re: What Intercooler options are available?

For band for the buck the retro takes it. If you want all out the tapercore is hard to beat but doesn't come in a kit to install in the '94-'97 trucks. Theoreticly an install kit that works for the retro SD coolers should work but it hasn't been confirmed as of yet. The Banks cooler is probably the best kit available but is spendy. Hypermax makes a kit for the '94-'97 trucks as well that is pretty good too.

Re: What Intercooler options are available?

Another way to reduce EGT's is to put on a more efficent turbo. But it will cost more than the intercoolers.

Re: What Intercooler options are available?

Believe it or not my egt's didnt drop after h2e install. Egt's did however at higher boost (25+ psi) not skyrocket anymore. IMO if you want low egt's a 6oh ic is the way to go, period.

Re: What Intercooler options are available?

I put the Banks powerpack kit on my truck and am very happy with it. That being said, I wish I knew of this site prior to that purchase, because it was expensive. The install went smoothly, and egt's are fine, so I guess I'll live with it.

Re: What Intercooler options are available?

Thanks for all the replies! I was also curious about options to an intercooler (chip, etc.). I currently tow with superchips 1705 on tow safe, but I'm sure there are better options on a real 4 pos. chip. Dale at Tymar suggested that there might be better options to reducing EGT than a retrofit intercooler, but I have not yet had a chance to discuss this with him. I remain open to other options as well!
Thanks again,
Doug

Re: What Intercooler options are available?

Keep in mind you need to lower the sway bar mounts 1 1/8" to clear the IC on 2wd trucks with the GTS/99 retro kit.

Re: What Intercooler options are available?

Other options would be to get better air flow through the engine such as a better flowing intake and exhaust system or running a lower hp chip. You could also upgrade the turbo but you probably aren't getting the stocker out of it's efficiency range so that probably wouldn't help much. Dale doesn't seem to like intercoolers much especially the retro ones. Yes they make more lag but if you want to make it run cooler and more efficient then it's a must when you start turning these things up.
