I'm picking up my first Ford PSD 7.3 1997 CC 4X4, was wondering what modification should I do first , is there a power chip? exhaust brake?? I'm not new to diesels but what do the knowing folks recommend for an engine manual? Just replaced my heads on my 6.5 Suburban ouch!! I will be towing a 29ft trailer about 5,400 lbs (well with in the limits of this truck), I will put the vegetable oil fuel system in.Also make my own biodiesel. Your wisdom will be appreciated.
mods:
-TYMAR or that style air cleaner
-at minimum new downpipe if not a full exhaust
-chip
-ccv
-if you live in a warmer climate the a/c mod never hurts
-shim the fuel presure regulator
-then if you are serious about mods, ie injectors and crazy power... contact bean or swamp
crank case vent
its on the driver side valve cover and vents into you intake.
most people me included turn the vent around and hook a long piece of hose to it and run it out towards the back of the truck or plumb it into the exhaust.
I'm not real sure how this helps anything other than keeping you turbo blades clean of oil and grime.
of course then you will have to plug the hole on your intake hose.

Mines shimmed and I still can get 23 mpg... Did it fairly soon after I got the truck so don't have much to compare it to. My pump did develop a leak a few months later, however it did have 80000 miles and you kinda have to expect that when you are making something that is broken in at one pressure for hours or running to nearly double. Wasn't to early for it and was worth the gain to me... Pumps are only a hundred bucks or so. You could always just wait til you need a new pump. Oh and I rednecked mine with a BB, if you wanted to spend some money you could get the california regulator sping and junk from ford. I'm sure baz's site has something written up on it. Gauges are over rated...
