My bro-n-law just lifted his 99 f350 4" and put on 35s, he was running 3.73s but has noticed quite a difference in pulling(lol ya think!) He asked me what gear setup would get him back to stock power/milage....I am used to jeeps, but figured I'd ask the Gurus...lol...so what does he need, 4.56? or is 4.10 enough?

I tow 9000# and was going to stay with 4.10s all the way up to 37's. mabey instead of gears a few other mods would make the difference. 3.73s are great. if you mean 3.55's then mabey a switch but I would just go with more power unless bigger tires are coming.

If he goes to 4.10's with 35" tires he will basically be back to a 3.73 ratio. There was a online calculator that gives you a rundown with tire size and axle ratio. That is why I went to 4.10's.

4:56 are a sweet gear in my humble .o2's worth in any tires bigger than a 35" if you tow or haul heavy.

I have 4:10 gears in my truck and 35's. Tow 10,000 pounds bout every day. Still plenty of power on startup. The only time I noticed and problems was last summer towing my travel trailer out west. With the bigger tires my exaust temps got high pulling up the mountians. Not sure if gears would be part of that cause or not. My .02
I tow pretty heavy and have been running 3.73's with anything from 35's to 37's for over 5 years now. Pulls strong. Sounds like HP might be the missing link, lol.
But to answer the question, 4.10's would "put it back to stock" basically.
Good Luck.

I think i will tell him 4.56 because he does plan to go bigger. He also uses it as a work truck and huals a lot of chemicals(offshore company), he said he was scared to take the truck over 60mph with 6,000lbs loaded. Im guessing rpms were getting up there, not sure though. Thanks again guys!

Remember the lower the gears the "weaker" they get. I don’t know if I’d want 4.56’s, BIG tires and towing heavy, for BIG tires and light towing the 4.56's should be cool but your asking a lot from that smaller pinion with that amount of torque. I have 4.10's in our 99 (stock tires) and that pulls a 37 1/2' triple slide fifth wheel at 65 very nicely. I bet he'd be happy with the 4.10's and a good chip IMO.
JIM
Jim, the pinion strength is a serious issue no-doubt, but in the case of the 10.25-10.5" sterlings, the pinion is pretty dang big even with low ratios. I run 4.10's in another truck that gets beat on VERY hard, lol, and I actually twisted the pinion shaft but all else was good. Isn't all the way up to like 7.12 or something crazy like that offered for the sterling axles?
I've never seen it on a sterling, but on say a Dana 44, busted pinions everyday of the week from running very low gears (numerically high).
Good Point

I'd be real intrested in seeing the pinion gears of a 3.73, 4.10 and a 4.56 side my side. Maybe I can swing by the local drivetrain shop and see if they would be so kind as to open a few boxes for me...
Thanks Hpop.
