What Rear end do I have

I have a 97 F350 single cab stroker, I need to change the rearend fluid in it. how do you know which one we have. The book says i have to put a friction modifier in if it's a different type.Thanks.

Re: What Rear end do I have

GrantFire1 -- The friction modifier is if you have a limited-slip rear axle.

There are several ways to determine what type of rear axle you have. The first is by the Axle Code on the Vehicle Certification Label on the driver side door. The second is by reading the axle tag on the rear axle itself. This tag is attached via on the the differential cover bolts.

A 4L10 or 3L55 on the axle tag means you have the limited slip while a 410 355 means you do not have the limited slip and do not have to worry about friction modifier.

If you can give us the Axle Code from the Vehicle Certification Label, we can look it up and let you know what you have.

Cheers from Orlando, FL!

Re: What Rear end do I have

that would be if you have a limited slip rear end. Easy to tell (if its not broke) Jack up the rear and spin the tire, if the other side goes the SAME direction it is a limited slip and requires the friction modifier. If one goes one way and the opposite side goes the other it is a standard rear and just replace the fluid. Alxe code on the door should tell if it WAS a LS and is now broke if you think that is the case. Plus if you pull the diff cover you can see the clutch packs.
