What setting is best?

I have a 31 foot travel trailer that I am taking out west this summer (as soon as the kids get out of school). My question is this : On the TS 6 pos chip what setting is going to be the best for towing? I have stock/ High Idle/ 50hp/ 75hp/ 100hp/ 140hp. Going to begoing from Fl to Az and hand out around the canyons. Also does anyone know any good 4x4 trails out there. Looking for some 4 wheelin that a little diffrent than what we got in Fl. (MUD and lots of it)

Re: What setting is best?

Kurt, with the weight of that 30 ft+ fiver, your pyro and tranny guage is going to dictate which setting is best. Great to see the tranny upgrades are already there. What about your cooler? how big? Didn't see one listed in your sig.....

Re: What setting is best?

Havnt done a cooler yet. I think that will be my next upgrade but I dont think that my wallet will allow it before this trip. Going to try to go for about six weeks total. How far away from Gainesborro,Tn. is athens?

Kurt

P.S. Almost forgot 2 things:

Will your trip allow you to replace a tranny while out on vacation?
Cheaper to install a much needed cooler now than a tranny "out there" somewhere. A good cooler can be found easily on eBay, I bought one last month for an automatic swap in my Bronco, it was rated for a 16,000GVW truck, brand new, still in the blister pack ,shipped to my door for under 30.00. Dang cheap insurance policy. Here's a ebay link to one identical to mine

Re: What setting is best?

Thanks for the link. Did you run that cooler inline with the stock cooler or as a replacement? ( I was talking about an intercooler before when I said my wallet could not handle it). Also did it make a good size diff in tranny temp switching to the bigger cooler? I f so I will get that one now.

Re: What setting is best?

I will only say, "Go SEC"...these other folks don't need to see what I'd say about "Go Gators"...He-He! Words of wisdom from my Grand Dad:
"it doesn't cost any more to go first class....you just can't stay as long!" with the weight of the fiver, plus wind resistance, plus the piece of crap oem cooler, please look into a cooler, you need to get your tranny temps down around 80°-85° above ambient in unloaded conditions....I'm seeing 160° on 85° degree days completly unloaded @ 70-80 mph on the interstate....hate to think where it would be without the 40k cooler I have now. It's a year or so down the road, but my wife has turned into the fifth wheel professor...I know what my next major purchase is going to be!! Can't find Gainsboro Tn on mapquest, must be in west tenn, we easterners don't venture out of these mountains very often, (use the term HILLBILLY)....Location of the chip switch I picked up from this site...great place huh? good luck with your trip, Jim

Re: What setting is best?

Here the one I purchased: Tru-cool if you go this route don't spend the money on the by-pass valve, I have yet to see anyone say that they have kept it on their truck... and here are a few pics of the install.... install , enjoy your trip....

Re: What setting is best?

I am using the Tru-Cool 4739 also but I did install the bypass valve...at least for now. It works very similar to your radiator thermostat. It gradually opens until your ATF comes up to operating temperature...in this case somewhere around 180 degrees. Then it allows all the ATF to go through the cooler. I haven't had a change to test it while towing but in a couple of weeks I'll do that. If I am not happy with the results, I'll remove the bypass also. I believe as far as coolers go, the bigger the better

[/ QUOTE ] Here is a whole gamut of coolers.
I added mine in lieu of the radiator unit, it was already being used to cool my power steering fluid.

Re: What setting is best?

I got a Tru-Cool 24K gvw cooler through Dale Isley at TYMAR, and haven't seen my tranny temps over 165° since. I ditched the stock cooler, by the way.
Tru-Cool coolers, at least mine anyway, have an internal system that only circulates tranny fluid through the entire body of the cooler once the fluid reaches a high enough temperature.

Re: What setting is best?

I tow my 38' (over all) 12,500 pound tripple slide 5ver with a TS 75hp single position chip.

Just have to know how to drive it for the power and EGT's.

Where in AZ are you going? I know of a few pretty cool trails around the Tucson area and a few down around Patagonia...but thats about it.
