Power Strokes 1994-1997 Upgrades and AftermarketUpgrading or adding OEM or aftermarket equipment to your 1994-1997 Ford F-Series with Power Stroke engine.
okay, 249,800 miles on a just purchased 1997 7.3L PSD. I disconnected the EBPV thanks to you guys, and am doing the DIY intake mod next, and then maybe a chip. What I don't get is why should I change the stock exhaust if I am pulling some through the year but not all of the time? A lil' education and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

for one your truck will run cooler you will get better fuel economy because less restriction and they sound cool that is the basics of a aftermarket exhaust.
Hello and welcome
At the very least youre gonna want to do a downpipe, the downpipe in OBS powerstrokes is shaped like an oval to follow the contour of the firewall, its a huge restrictor. A bigger exhaust helps with egts. Start off with DP, youll be happy, if you decide to get a full exhaust you can always get a downpipe back system or get turbo back and sell the DP you get in the kit.
Another restrictor in the exhaust (without getting into legallities) is from the muffler back, but our mufflers are a straight through design, thats the good thing in our exhaust.
Good luck
Dan

How much would I have to cut into the firewall?

Not much. You only have to cut the pinch seam and bend it out of the way.
Best way is to mark where you want to cut using the current dp as a reference.
Remove the old dp, make the cuts, bend the seam using a 2x4 and a bfh, install
new dp...

Thank you so much for the reply, I am wondering too, does the bigger DP affect the turbo as far as wear? .... And, do you have a recommendation on DP's?

I have a DPPI 2-piece downpipe. There are a few other makers, some being one piece. I'd probably do a one-piece if I had to do it over again, but expect a wrestling match to get it in there.
not sure why everyone always goes to saying buy a down pipe from anyone.
I have made mine for about 40.00 to me that is worth not spending 150.00 and up.
I also understand that not allot of people own migs but I do know that just about every town has someone that does and can at least do the welding for you.
when I was looking for a down pipe I noticed that all the ones out there didn't open up to 4 inch in till it was at the location of the catylic converter, so that is when i decided to make my own, as soon as my pipe cleared the wall I opened to 4 inch
I ordered a 2 piece aluminized DP as it was cheap. At the time I was just running a 3.5" straight pipe. When I went to 4" exaust I took the bottom half of the DP off, slipped a 3"-4" reducer on and went with 4" flex from there to the first exhaust hanger (could probably use a 45 also.) The reducer in place of the bottom half of the DP just clears the tranny lines, so my DP is only 3" for about a foot.
So, if you decide to order a DP then a 2 piece will be easier to install and allow you more flexability down the line.
