When adding an intercooler, do we HAVE to have an early 99 y-pipe or will a 2001 model work? My concern is where the turbo bolts to the intake.
You will need one from an early 99. A 2001 wont fit. You will have to change to much to get it to work. But the early 99 will be a direct fit for you 97

To further what pwrtrip mentioned. If you are to use a late 99.5 and newer Y pipe you would have to change the turbo, turbo pedistal, up pipes and up pipe collector as they are different then the 97 or early 99.5. Given that you have the D66, would guess you would not want to change out all the for noted stuff. As I recall factory early 99.5 may be the easiest or there are aftermarket ones available i'm sure, or you could fab your own, kinda depends on what you want to do.
