Will not start

My friends '97 F350 PSD will not start. He is not getting any fuel to the filter housing witht the key in the on position. Is there a lift pump in each tank? Is there a low pressure fuel pump on the frame rail somewhere also? What about a fuse somewhere? What does the tank transfer valve look like? Should we be able to hear the fuel pump when the key is turned to the on position? Sorry for all the ?'s but just trying to help him out. Thanks.

Re: Will not start

It only has one mechanical pump that sits right under the turbo. So you won't get any fuel flow just by turning the key on. The engine has to be spinning to get any fuel.

OK, is there a fuse or something for that pump? Should we be able to disconnect a wire at the pump and check for 12 volts? Thanks again.

Re: Will not start

Nothing electrical the fuel pump. It only pumps when the engine is turning over so there's no fuse or wires going to it.

Re: Will not start

So is this the HPOP like on my newer PSD? There is no lower pressure fuel pump that supplies the injection pump it sucks fuel all the way from the tank?

Re: Will not start

Yes, your buddies fuel pump runs off a lobe on the camshaft. The motor needs to be turning for the fuel pump to pull the fuel from the tanks...
