Won't smoke when it should

94 1/2 Powerstroke F350 drw, 5 spd, Edge Evolution box, 3 inch downpipe, 5 inch straight exhaust, and an intake.

So far every manual tranny diesel I've ever seen with some mods will roll more black smoke if you bog the engine down at a lower speed in a higher gear. My truck smokes more at higher rpm when I'm building more boost than at lower rpm. Seems kinda backwards to me. Anyone have an explanation for this?

:Edit: Forgot to mention that it will haze dark gray smoke in any gear at any speed if you give it a little more gas, just much more in the very top end of the rpm range.

Welcome to the site. You can put the specs of your truck in your sig to let everyone know more about it. Do you have gauges? Some boost numbers and egt's are a great diagnostic tool, plus will open the door for more upgrades [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smokin.gif[/img]

Took care of the main stuff on the sig, will add more to it later.
As far as egt's I can't break 1000 deg. no mater what. Probe is in the driver's manifold, right at the front of the block. And for boost numbers , it seems to build boost slower with the Edge box set on extreme than set at factory. It built 15lbs. before the box and 15 lbs. after the box just seems to take a lil longer to get there, but the truck revs alot faster on the box.

I had the exact same thing happen on the edge. however, when i put that exact tuner on a 99, it would roll when bogged. I just sold the evo and am getting a chip and 'jectors, so im not worried about it now. the best thing i could tell ya is get rid of it and get a chip.

I'm new to this electronic stuff, (old truck was an IDI turbo), can't I run the Evo and a chip? I know some stuff is stackable just not sure what. Was planning on getting a chip off Tony.

Something doesn't sound right, you should be building alot more boost than that, also you should definetely be able to roll some coal with the evo. Seems like I used to be able to hit 28lbs of boost, and definetely got the most smoke in the bottom end. Also you can't stack your evo and a chip, have to run one or the other. I really liked my evo it shifted my tranny really good, and made good power. The custom chip has its advantages as well. Hope we can figure this out it sounds like maybe a fuel restriction, or air??

I bet you need to have you pcm reflashed to current spec's. a frend of mine had the same trouble your having after he had the dealer reflash the pcm . and he reinstalled his program ( after reflashing )
he was hittins 22-24 pounds of boost and LOTS [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/warmsmile.gif[/img] of black smoke!!

Allready had that done, had to have that done to even make the evo box work.
I got my box, tried to install and kept getting an error, called Edge tech and they said, "Oh yeah, it doesn't work on 94 1/2's without reflashing pcm."
Kinda pissed me off but I had local Ford dealer do it same day, cost me $75.

So that's not my problem [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] Any other ideas?

edge could have sent you a stock code writer to fix that problem. they sent me one when I had a problem with my evo.it was free all I had to do was send it back.

Since you have the edge, are you throwing any codes? I had a problem with low boost and it turned out to be the EBPS - unplugged it and problem solved. I also have the EBPV gutted so no worries.

Edge told me I had to send back the evo and my computer and I couldn't go without my truck for the week or so they said it would take round trip.

I am throwing a P0470 - Exhaust back pressure sensor circuit malfunction

I was assuming this was a bs code due to the open exhaust, I'm wrong ain't I? [img]/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img]

What benefit is there from gutting the EBPV?

sounds like the ebpv is sticking shut or shutting when its not supposed to. basically its plugging up the exhaust. try unplugging it and then later when u have a weekend or not gut it.
