New DP from Beans arrived, now I just have to figure out if I want to rebuild the exhaust as stock, or go for a single or dual stack.
Two things I want.
#1 Keep the soot of my BOAT!!
#2 Not make too much noise that it becomes annoying.
BTW, my truck is just a simple flat bed dually work truck and I don't really want come up thru the flat bed.
So, <ul type="square">[*]are you happy with your stacks? [*]Anything you'd do differently? [*]How far above the top of the cab did you go? [*]Any problem with vibrations or cab noise from your stacks?
I am extremely happy with my stacks and wouldn't change a thing with them. My only complaint with them is that i didn't do them sooner. i bought a kit from dpp diesel and it was excellent fit and very easy to install. My turnouts are about 5-6 inches above the cab. As for cab noise, in the drivers seat it is alot quieter than my old turnout before the bed. A friend just told me over the weekend that it is louder in the back seat than before but i haven't rode there since i put them on.

I've been thinking about this one a while, since I'm putting a flatbed on my 91. I havent come up with a way to do it without loosing deck space on my SRW truck that sees offroad. Is the truck a dually with a flatbed added later or a true cab and chassis with a flat bed? On a wider 2wd rig I would think of running the stacks up the outside of the bed like a big rig, attached to the headache rack at the top. There are chrome heatsheilds for 4" pipe that would look proportional in this case. In anycase the place to go for custom exhaust is shops where med duty truck parts are sold or truck serviced. as far as sound goes, a mufler could always be added later.

I enjoy mine. I cut them even with the cab. I have pics of mine on my webshot but haven't done any pics with them 4" lower. After it rains I let the truck warm up a little longer to burn the water out which keeps down all the speckles on my truck (which you don't have to worry. Stacks are what's cool right now I just hope 2 yrs down the road I don't look too out of date.
Answers to your question:
Very
Nothing at all
Even with the top of the cab (still sounds the same)
No vibration
I have 2's and the smoke pours out, I love showing them off there are 2 other trucks in our town (Sebring, Fl) but none of them put out as much smoke. I cut them down so they're not so "look at me". With them cut down it's not really the focal point of the truck anymore (which is what I was going for)
Like I tell ppl when you have a setup like mine stacks aren't for show they're there for a purpose. I'd feel sry for anyone that was on my right side when I had my 5" exhaust.

with the stock DP my '96 droned kinda bad at 60, now with the full 3" its better but still louder then I would like inside, you can talk but you have to listen other wise they get drown out. with the windows down its to much, I wish it was quieter.
the '97 they are farther back, and straight up, so the in cab noise is pretty minimal, windows up or down its about the same.
both truck has a 3" DP and full 3" all the way to the stacks with a Y pipe where the soot trap was.

Yes, true cab and chassis with standard cab and an 8 foot 4 inch wide bed that's 11 foot long. My current thought is to put the stacks on the inside corner formed where the headache rack and the outside of the cab meet. (will need some kind of heat shield for passenger safety..)
Since that's hard to put into words, here some quickie snap shots showing a temp mock up idea (for single stack at the moment..)
BTW, Does anyone have a method to MEASURE the tempature of their stacks?? (I ask as I'm thinking of ceramic jet coating them, or if it's cool enough (<= 400F) I could powder coat them...

I have never actually measured the temps of my stacks but i can tell you that if you touch them on accident you will notice something hot on yourself and move out of the way before you are actually burnt. Although if you go with one stack i could see it geting a little hotter than two.

with 1 it gets way hoter and has way more presser than duels.
my smoke does not hit my trailer at all and stays out of the air stream of the the truck. with duels this is harder to do.
but duels look a lot better.
but until i make the power to really need duels ill keep my single

James, I asked the same question some time ago. Rodney responded with this answer:
Well I'm surprised, the temp was only 172º. I've touched them before and I would have sworn they were a lot hotter than that.
Cutting out the crossmember is not a problem. I had to have the stacks in the corners in order to fit an aux tank between the stacks and the wheelwells. At first I was a little concerned about the load carrying capacity in the front of the bed with no support. My tank holds 110 gallons and everything is holding up just fine. The tank is within ¼" of the stacks and it hasnt burned and paint off the tank.

I put the single stack on mine almost a year ago. It's a love- hate relationship now. I love the look, and the fact that it get's looks. A single stack is really more of an attention grabber than duals, in my opinion.
However, I hate the noise. When I put it on, I only drove about 20 minutes a day. Now, my one way commute takes a bit over an hour. By the time I get to work, I'm almost deaf. It's fine for around town, but long road trips will get old- fast.
As far as heat, the only issue I ever had was when a plastic McDonalds cup got wedged between the stack and the side of the bed. It didnt burn the truck down, but I do have melted cup stuck to my exhaust now. Just something to be aware of.

i have free 5in dual stacks and are loud with the windows down and cruisin down the highway its easily over 100db but i don't mind it to much just the long trips it gets old anything over 5hrs is rough, i pull out the ear plugs lol
