18 seconds on GP's

My '92 truck runs the gp's for 18 seconds on first start up of the day. It's only like 50° out and this seems like a long time. The wait to start light doesn't work now (not sure why) but I watch the voltage gauge and can hear it click off. Then I hit the starter and it fires in a second. All plugs are beru...so I am not too worried about them getting stuck...but isn't 18 seconds too much?

BTW...I sparked something on the gp controller when the plastic cover fell off. That is when the WTS light stopped working. Any ideas how to fix that light? And if it's related to long plug burn. I never counted the burn before that but it seemed about as long.

Re: 18 seconds on GP's

It's not the fuse. The bulb must be burnt out. The fuse that is for that "wait to start" circuit, also is the fuse for the engine warning indicator, plugged fuel filter indicator and the water in fuel indicator. I assume those indicators are still working.

The service manual states that the glow plugs heat up in zero to fifteen seconds, depending on engine temperature. I would test each glow plug. Tim

Re: 18 seconds on GP's

I tested every one of them when installing motor and none were open. All had about 1ohm. Isn't there a wire that goes straight to the light off the controller? Maybe I blew that...or something in the solid state device. Guess it's time to swap it out for my spare controller.

Does anybody know on the '92 dash if there is simply a bulb you can replace for the WTS light. I know the two previous dashes had a module you had to replace at the tune of about $75???

I think that you should be able to replace that bulb. On my '94, it is replacable and the bulb is a 194. The wire that goes to the WTS light is the black/pink with the plug. Tim

Re: 18 seconds on GP's

We are overlooking something,

How does the truck start?

If the truck starts, with no issue's, and does not eat GP's, than everything is likely to be OK.

Different, but OK,

So do you mean that when you turn the key on the cycling starts immediately or after a 8-10 second wait (shown on the volt meter as a draw) then it starts swinging back and forth while cycling for a total of 18 seconds.

Check fuse 17 it handles the WTS and a few other things your not saying do not work right now.

Re: 18 seconds on GP's

It burns for a solid 18 seconds and then cycles. The thing fires like a gasser. Within a second it's lit with a smooth idle. All fuses are good. Must be that bulb...or wire. I need to pull the dash to clean the gauges anyway so I guess I will check the 194 while I'm in there.

Tim...now that I think of it I probly didn't plug in the single wire that was looked all black (must have pink stripe). I am going to go double check right now!

On edit:
Case closed!!!
I plugged that magic wire back in and we're in business. Found out the WTS light goes off before the GP's stopped pulling voltage. So the 18 seconds was the full gp cycle and the WTS light goes off earlier. So no burnt out gp's and no burnt bulb in dash. Tim...you da man!...and the rest of TDS...I love this site!
