I have just recently bought a 1989 F350 Crew cab long bed non-turbo diesel. My question is how hard is it to put a turbo on it and do they make any performance chips for this truck or engine? Also is there any lifts for this truck?
Your best bet to find info on this site is to do a search, using the search tab....
They don't/can't make Chips for 6.9/7.3 IDI since they are mechanically driven. There are plenty of lifts out there but since I am have not done this yet I cannot comment.
*You beat me to it...*
In genereal, it sounds like most guys can put a turbo on in a day with the right tools. The three major options for turbos are: Hypermax, ATS and Banks. You can usually find guys that are trying to sell them used or for about twice as much you can get them brand new......

Ahh I see. Okay next question, and by reading other threads I dont want anyone to blow up. What's the easiest way to make it "roal coal" or have black smoke and how bad is it on the engine?
but.....unless you are 16 and have alot of money to spend in fuel its just rediculous to want black smoke since all that is is unused fuel going into the atmosphere for the rest of us to breathe!!!!
Your best bet for power is getting a turbo guages and then turning up the IP since then you have the capability to use the fuel....and not just expel it into the atmosphere....
Rant off....

Yea, the majority of us are SO impressed. (See 6.9 thread)
I just wanted to say, I should give a crap about our atmosphere, but I don't. Therefor my diesel will smoke and "roal coal" pollute our atmosphere while I run trees over. C'mon you greeenies can't you rant somewhere else? Go to a rice burner forum and thank them for being so clean. Then you can thank the 90 percent of them that are Mexican for taking our jobs. And if I waste gas, that's my problem not yours.

I have been investigating upgrading my turbo (sig truck) and I have been told that Banks will no longer support the "sidewinder" turbo package. ATS is no longer making any parts for their turbo system . I talked to a tech at Hypermax and he was quite adament that hypermax had no intention of stoppping producing or supporting the "pulse Turbo" system. I also noticed that it is about $500-600 less. Not Cheaper just more affordable!! If My information was wrong about Banks or ATS I would like to know.

There are two different companies that have the entire turbo systems out there for this 7.3 IDI system. Gale Banks Engineering and ATS. I sure that there is others out there, but those are two complete systems that really make that engine run quite well.
I had a 1990 F-250 7.3 4x4 for five years with the Gale Banks system on there with E4OD automatic transmission. It was a great truck that knocked down 17.2 mpg for all around driving. I had put a 120k after the installation of the system at 135k. When I traded the truck in, the dealer came back with a smile on his face. The truck ran great.
Challenges that came up. Those systems are not inter cooled, so heat builds on the engine. Cooling system, clutch fan, etc., needs to be in top condition! I live at 5,500 elevation and when towing I would see near over heating condition when towing 8,000 to 10,000 up 6% grades. It always had lots of power, just was little much for the cooling system. I have seen one guy install a 6.0 inter cooler in one, though it took a lot of work to get it into the front core support area. His boost dropped a couple of points though it did run even better and stayed cooler while towing.
On the Dyno at Super Flow, we saw 217 hp, with 446 lb ft torque.
The price for the gale banks system was $3,100.00 Though I am sure that they might have some in inventory that they might want to get rid of at a discount since there is not many people updating the IDI's. Good system and fairly straight forward to install.
ATS is no longer making any parts for their turbo system .
Chuckster, is that the usual internet crap or did the ATS store tell you that themselves? I ordered 3 minor replacement parts for my ATS wastegated system and the parts guy never mentioned anything about that. Plus their adds in TL, etc, still look like they're pushing the wastegated kit. I read (this IS internet crap) that you can't get parts for their old non wastegated system, so I don't know if that's true or not. They quit making that system in about '90 so there might not be many of those around, most guys opted for the better system after it came out.

NO I heard it from people at work that run that dirtymax and have installed the Banks systems. There is an ATS dealer about 30 miles from here and my Stepson and his wife's brother used the dealer for some work on their comeaparts, and got it from the shop.
It would be nice to know that Banks will keep supporting the sidewinder and ATS will still make parts for my truck. I realize that it is a matter of personal preference, and I firmly believe that the "salesman" you talk to at any one of these places will tell you what you want to hear so you will buy from them. I did not talk to the sales dept. at hypermax, I talked to the tech dept. when I orderd my Cowl induction kit. I would not discourage any one from buying any one of the systems available to us running the IDI...I just thought it would behouve any one to really question the manufacurer since we are becoming an "old" technology in the automotive realm. I have seen too many things "no longer supported" to invest that kind of money. Any way thanks for letting me "get it out of my system"
