I just bought a 1992 f350 dually with 5 speed with 156k..Changed my tranny oil, look like 85w-90 was in there..put dextron 111(8qts)back in and did not want to shift right...dained and went back with 85w-90 oil and shifts fine..Shouldn't i be running atf..Can't understand why it didn't work? Were all 1992 tranny's zf's?
more info needed.
generally, atf is the norm for a ZF5. if you have 85/90, it is masking a potential problem. Either the synchros are worn out, the bearings are shot, or the plastic tips on the shift forks are wiped from the lack of oil.

It would take a couple of oil changes to clear out all the gear oil, so whatever dexron you are running is going to be contambinated. Do check to make sure your clutch system and your firewall is solid before condemming the trans. There's no doubt that the gear oil is masking a problem, you have to figure out what went wrong.

It shouldn't take 8 qts?
ok, when i bought the truck the guy said he had rebuilt the tranny, could it be the parts he used require the different oil? ..When i drained the oil(dextron) it smelled burned really bad with only about 10miles of driving.
zf parts only comes in one flavor, these are germans we are dealing with here. Suggestion. drain and refill. try to determine if you have syncro, bearing or shift fork issues. chances are you have bearing issues. It is prolly set up too tight.

When my 92 5-speed ZF started going south (210,000 miles), the failure mode was to pop out of reverse unless it was fully, totally, carefully engaged. Finally had it rebuilt before getting to the point where it would not stay in reverse. Not a cheap rebuild, and the mechanic who took it out sent it to a trans shop because it required special tools to disassemble the gear packs, etc.
