1993 f250 rear brake drum removal

Hey - I'm trying to remove the rear brake drum on my 1993 f250. I've backed off the adjuster and it still won't budge. The local library doesn't have a manual for the truck. but a friend told me the axle has to come out. I thought that was only on older models. Shouldn't the drum come off? What am I missing. Thanks. Larry

The drum is probably rusted to the hub along with the wheel studs. Get some liquid wrench and spray the area and hit the drum with a hammer wail a while and then repeat. If you have the shoes backed off enough sooner or later it should come off, and you do not have to remove the axle.

Jim:

thanks for the advice. A little more "persuasion" and it came right off.

Just a heads-up - dunno why you're removing the drums, but if tis for wheel cylinder replacement and you plan on reusing the drums after all that beating you may end up with a warped drum and nicely pulsating brakes - guess how I know. If you're replacing the drums, disregard all that.

Yeah - I Kinda figured that - which is why I was a bit gentle to start with. It is to replace a bad wheel cylinder, but it is what is I guess. I'm not going to sweat it. It had to come off. And, now I can move forward. Thanks again.

If you hammer on the drum around the center to break it loose it will usually be Ok for reuse. Don't hammer at the edge!
