1993 F350 vss

My speedometer has started to jump around a little at highway speeds (50 to70) and after just replacing the trans.(e4od) last year, I did not want to take a chance on new problems. I picked a new VSS at napa yesterday and am not sure where it goes. The sensor on top of the diff. does not look anything like it and I think that is the abs sensor. I hate to say I can change the transmission but dont know where the vss is.
The truck is a 1993 F350 , 7.3 turbo , DRW , 2WD.
Thanks Dan

The VSS and RABs sender are one and the same, on the pumpkin.

Re: 1993 F350 vss

The vss is on the top of the diff, looking from the rear, l/h side. I think it is a 1/2 socket (just one bolt). Remove the sensor before disconnecting the wiring plug. If you have not changed the fluid now is the time. When you have the rear cover off check the "gear" that the vss reads for any problems (have seen some that have had 'crud' between the gears).

If that doesn't fix it I wouldn't worry about it, the tranny is done shifting at that speed, mine does the same thing.

Re: 1993 F350 vss

The parts store may have given you the wrong VSS sensor. Some applications use a gear driven one mounted in the trans tailshaft, and others use the magnetic pickup one in the rear axle.
