1993 Ford F350 (non turbo) Fuel sending unit

I think my fuel sending unit went out today but I just want some advice to make sure before I spend money to buy a new one. On Saturday I was driving my truck and the fuel gauge shot all the way to full then slowly came back down then today I started it up and it shot all the way past full and is stuck there now if I flip to the front tank the gauge works fine but when I switch back to the rear it goes all the way past full again and I know the rear tank is at about a quarter I went to the fuel station to get diesel and I put about 15 gallons in her and she is still shot past full. I pulled out my test light and my test light tests both positive and negative and I am getting both back on my tanks harness. So do you think it my fuel sending unit or should I be checking something else? Thanks!

Could be the sender is worn out....... try Rock auto for a new one.

Here are the fuel guage test #s

22 ohms sent to the guage it reads empty "E"

145 ohm sent to the guage it reads full "F"

Here are the sender test #s

Sender at empty stop 14-18 ohms

Sender at full stop 154-162 ohms

Can't find this sending unit!

I'm also looking for the sending unit to a 1993 non-turbo diesel. I have the front-rear 2 tank setup and I need the sending unit for the rear tank. I checked Rock Auto and they don't list the one I need. Anyone know of another place to find it? I also tried all the local auto parts stores, AutoZone, Robbins, Ford, etc. etc. Everyone seems to try to sell me one with a fuel pump on it.

I have the same year and tank configuration as you, and I just ordered the right sending units from rock auto a few weeks ago. They should have it. I think it's part number PS20 or PS21.

So, both my front and rear went out on my 92, all with in 3 months.

I had a hard time believing this happened. I decided to look at them both before spending that much cash. I am soooooo glad I did.

The floats are made from very thin copper or brass ? It really did not matter, they had very minor fractures from the mounting clips they hang from, thus fuel of diesel and not floating.

I took them out, drained, cleaned, and finally applied a really good gasket making type sealer on the fractures.

3 months later, all is working perfect.

Easy for me, this happened on my dump truck.

Total time - 1 hour start to finish.

Check em first, before dropping that cash !

I did that with my rear tank, time to try it with my front I guess. I used RTV to seal mine.

will the gasket or rtv sealant deteriorate from the diesel fuel? would it be better to solder it if its copper or brass?

I have soldered a few floats in my day. Just make sure ALL the fuel is cleaned out and dry.

I think it's easier to lift the bed. Just leave the rear bolts in loose and lift the front.

I use my engine hoist. Changed a fuel pump in a full size Chevy in 25 minutes start to finish.

I am having the same problem with my senders, but removing the bed is not really possible as the previous owner welded part of the gooseneck hitch to the bed. Don't know why he did that, but the bed is not comming off short of cutting it off. Is there any good way to get the straps off the mid tank without taking the bed off and that would be a whole other mess to deal with. I have looked at taking it down a few times and each time I said to myself, "I can live with a bad sender." But really it would be nice to fix it if I can get those straps loose and and then back on. Has anyone done it without removing the bed?

You don't need to remove the bed, the straps bolt on. I took my rear tank down, but I lifted the bed for my front tank, and now I need to do it again (did pickup doing sender)
