I need to take the heads off of my 93 Non-Turbo IDI, does anyone know of a good write-up to follow for this procedure? I have never been into an IDI before. Thanks for any help. Rich.

Mel Agne had done a very good write up on pulling the head on an IDI. He has a 6.9, but the procedure is the same. The headbolts are larger in the 7.3 and can be reused, but I'd recommend getting new headbolts. The 100lb.-ft of torque for the 7.3 headbolts is a lot and can stretch the bolts. Get a good cherry picker and use the article. Please ask questions if they come up along the way.
I had my 7.3 out of the truck for an overhaul a couple of years ago. A valve and a piston kissed, on number one, at about 70 miles an hour. I removed the heads, while the engine was still in the truck. It was difficilt, especailly the driver side.
After taking the engine out, I discovered how easy it was to remove the engine,so If I ever have to take the heads off again, I'm going to remove the engine to get to the heads off, it is much, much easier, in my oponion.

Did you detach the transmission from the engine when you did it?
