Definitely. I replaced all my return lines except one (IP return) and it was still stalling, but would always start back up. replaced that last line with 5/16" 30R7 and has been running great for 2 days. FWIW, the returns were 3/16" 30R7

My van's been harder to start the past few days, it's been much cooler overnight here. Anyway, I've been cycling the glowplugs 3-4x then trying to start. When it cranks it's slow at first then speeds up and eventually starts, I get a small cloud of white smoke that quickly goes away. I haven't tested anything yet but it seems as though the starter or batteries may be the culprit. Aside from disconnecting and voltage testing the batteries and measuring GP resistance is there a test for the starter? Van is about to kick over 90k original miles so my guess is most stuff is original including the starter and solenoid but I have no way of knowing for sure.
A volt meter is 10 bucks down at the corner store. Pull the starter out, inspect the Bendix end bushing, take it to a starter repair shop and have them test it. You could also place an amp meter on the positive cable at the starter and read the draw.
A gear reduction starter will spin the motor about 500 rpm. Mine usually starts before I can let go of the key... Get a Mistibuchi gear reduction starter. Its the differance between night and day....
Is gear reduction starter standard equipment... or is this one of those things that was "discovered" after our trucks were made?

I wonder if my starter is my starting issues also. Mine takes some cranking also but I do have a fuel leak but like mentioned air in lines will usually die after it starts. It looks like ip is leaking not really sure from were. I drive this thing maybe once a week so the fuel leak is not a very big issue. I was going to change over to electric fuel pump this week and see if this helps just as a starting point.

Question on the mitsubishi gear reduction starter looking at parts suppliers website they are all mitsubishi straight drive. One site says there is a different one for the idi turbo versus the 7.3 non turbo. Were did you get this mitsubishi starter at, because I cant believe this starter is different because the turbo. I have found the nippon denso on ebay will that work?

Well I killed my starter this morning trying to start the truck. It sat all day and I put a charger on it one battery while I put the starter in after work. Wow was I amazed, the engine barely turned over before firing up with a vengence! It literally started faster than anything I've ever seen, I don't think it even completed a full revolution before firing up.
I (we) really need to look at these engines for what they are, high compression. My drag car had 13.5:1 and would barely start with a race starter and one battery, I got a second battery in there and thus faster spinning and it started much better. Since diesels rely soly on compression to start it only makes sense that higher rpm cranking will start quicker/better. It's been getting cool here at night and I've been plugging in the block heater but I left it off tonight to see how well it starts in the morning.
Alrighty... whats the best route to take, are all the ford diesel starters interchangable (6.9idi-late7.3)? Theres one on Diesel Starters & Alternators 100% New Great Price that looks awesomely beefy. I like beefy.
