7.3 liter injectors stuck

Has anyone ever had a 7.3 90's injector come apart during removal and the tip stay in the boring hole? If so how do you get it out? It seems it is corroded

Re: 7.3 liter injectors stuck

I have read on here the procedure is to take one of your old injectors, preferrably one that looks bad, and grind all the threads off the top of the injector where it screws into the head. Then, you screw the injector body back down into the lower half of the injector and keep turning it until it turns the nozzle and gets it to come loose. I'd probably spray some penetrating oil down in the injector hole before I screwed the injector body back in.

Re: 7.3 liter injectors stuck

If there is carbon in the bore.........which sounds like there is.....

Place the cylinder at TDC. Clean the bore but do not dump carbon into the cylinders, best to remove the GP and if major amounts of carbon are found, then use a vacuum to clean/suck debris out through the injector or GP hole.

Re: 7.3 liter injectors stuck

Thanks definitely carbon in there I have not been able to budge the tips. I have let them soak overnight now in marvel mystery oil. This afternoon I will try working on the cleaning. I hope that will get them out the drivers side bank came out and replaced fine but this side has been a bear with alll of them. I hope to be able to restart it when done as it was weak about restarting before.

Re: 7.3 liter injectors stuck

Thanks a bunch I was thinking of cuting the bottom off an old one and then welding a bolt but what grinding the threads sounds a lot easier

Re: 7.3 liter injectors stuck

This problem is not uncommon......most likely the injectors were not installed on clean seats in the head, using new copper washers last time (a must). I advocate using antisieze liberally on the washer, injector barrel and the threads.....

Snap-on has a tool for cleaning the seats and bore......

I also use Mercury Power tune to disolve carbon deposits..... Remember that any accumulation of liquid or carbon in the cylinder can cause hydrolock so rotate the engine by hand/starter before installing the GPs and injectors.

Re: 7.3 liter injectors stuck

i had one come unscrewed on me when carbon stuck it in the bore. (you'd think they would put reverse threads on the bottom of those so they wouldn't come undone). like arthur says, make a puller from an old injector by grinding off the threads. if it still won't come loose like mine, weld a piece of allthread to it and make a slidehammer puller. i used a big washer at the end and a piece of pipe for the hammer. popped right out.
