i just purchased a 96 f-250 ext cab long bed 4x4 sat night at an auction, paid 1200.00 for it with 186,000 miles on it. I have a couple of questions, first was it a good deal? now on to the issue, i drove it home, smoked pretty good on start up and for about 15 minutes afterwards, i used the truck to go to all of our easter outings and it died once while idling at a family members house, started right back up, down the road from home it died while sitting at a stop sign started right back up, i now get it to start and then it dies after 1 minute or less, I talked with the owner of it and he says they havent driven it much since last year, they did put new batteries and filter in it last week. he also said it had new injectors last year and it has always been hard to start, i guess i am just looking for suggestions, i was tolp my cam position sensor could be bad or my injection pump ( i didnt think there was one one the 96) it is a turbo, any help would be great.
A 1996 would make it a PSD engine........ please try asking your question on the 7.3 PSD forum.......one step up............ Thanks for dropping bye.............

ORLY(oh, really)???!!!??? I beg to strongly differ. You were thinking right! You need to go back and give that store a smack on the head because the IDI stopped in 1994.5. Powerstroke came out right after that. I have a 1994 powerstroke, many here have 1994 IDI's.
How can you tell the difference between the two, short of of looking at the labels on the valve covers and the injection pump timing gear cover? I mean, do the IDI and PSD engines look similar enough to mix 'em up?

IDI has hard high-pressure injector lines clearly visible from the top of the engine. The Psd has none. The psd also has no injector pump. The psd's fuel filter is in the middle of the valley, the IDI is a round spin-on on the passenger side of the engine. The psd's intake is just a smaller Y that is bolted to both heads. The IDI actually has an intake manifold. IDI oil fill is in middle front of engine on the ip gear housing, the psd is on the passenger valve cover. Also, you cant see the injectors or the glowplugs on a psd(theyre under the valve cover) on an idi you can see most of them wihtout taking the intake hat off.
ia1981dog. could it be the fuel pump?put a clear fuel line off the return line on the injector pump and if there are bubbles going throught the line when idle you are getting air in the system
i also agree. you have a powerstroke DI not a IH Navistar IDI and you could very well have air in your fuel lines! check out the psd 7.3 forum... i hope you have a well stocked bank account! psd's are expensive for parts plus labor in a shop! good luck with your psd!

i run a salvage yard and provide a local shop with cheap parts so in turn my labor is reduced.
well thats a plus!

Did Ford put a PSD or a IDI in 1992? This thing has like 256,ooo miles on it. The only reason I would even consider looking at buying this thing is it is an ambulance that was just drove from one hospital to the next its whole life. It comes with a strict matinence record. What would it take to put a turbo on it?
No powerstrokes in 92. It started in 1994.5 Mine was made in july of 94 so its one of the first PSD's :P
To put a turbo on will take some labor. I wouldnt know,(never done it) but its almost just unbolt old parts and bolt up nice new parts plus some blood and sweat.
Also, air in the fuel lines is not very much of a problem with powerstrokes, now air in oil is as bad as air in fuel. Its easy to purge the psd fuel galleries because the intensifier piston just keeps pushing air into the engine in place of fuel so it will "self prime" in a way.
