Well I test drove an '08 and liked the crewcab but won't pay 70k for a truck that gets 2500mi a year. So with the canbuck where it is it's time to start buying parts. My '94 has 225k on her and runs good exept once in a blue moon when you start it will whap, whap, whap for a few seconds. I believe it is a valve guide. My concern is cavitation and valve guides as to where to buy them. I see Hypermax has a lot of parts and will probably order their intercooler this week. I will go with DPS injectors and their fuel pump but I am not sure about flywheels and such and would love opinions on which direction I should be going with this. New truck payments will buy a lot of parts and if I bought an '08 I would still keep the IDI to tow it back to the dealer.
Check with your local IH for a rebuilt set of heads.... around $750 a piece......

A knocking noise on startup that goes away after a few seconds may be a hydraulic lifter that is bleeding down. I have one in my truck that does it occasionally...

I put prp bronze guides in my heads as per the recommendation of a very trusted local diesel shop. They are harder bronze than the off the shelf ones and last a very long time I am told. If you have a good shop and no cracks then rebuild what you have.

83 300 sd ready to build a real hotrod engine for this one.
Misc. vw's scattered about.
I've had 4 sets of heads rebuild by a very good local shop. None of them cost over $250.00 for the pair. Those heads will probably outlast the rebuild engines they were put on. Just something to think about before you do to much. You've got an engine with 225,000, miles before you start sticking a lot of high performance parts in it how long is the engine going to last before major work and how good a shape is it in now.

Where can I get the bronze guides?, Hypermax has the valves and seats and I will do the bottom end. I have yet to find a rebuilder here in Calgary but I will. And what are PRP guides?
