Got to the point to remove the heads tonight. Got the left head off without much hassle than what was to be expected. Found a couple of head bolts not very tight. Got to the right head and all went for the worse. Broke 2 head bolts off between the last 2 cylinders.
The remainder of the bolts came off very difficult except 2 bolts found loose for the torque specs.
After getting the head off the block was what I didn't want to see. The last 2 cylinders on the right bank had evidence of rust on the cylinder walls. Yep 1 year ago the problem was overlooked. Seized cylinders from water in the cylinders from the intake. Thinking this was the demise of the 2 head bolts failing.
Now I have a block that needs rebuilding with 2 broken head bolts needing removed.
All this just to replace leaky HG's.
Good thing is I found out yesterday, from my buddy, that the $800.00 80,000 mile 7.3L is a good motor from an E series van.
Twas depressing enough to post her as a rolling chassis for sale.

i feel for you, Ron.
c'mon, though. with that $800 plant, you STILL have a fraction of what most of us have in ours - why sell? tow the Beef to the weekend & you'll have a team of experts at your disposal...
BTW: that beer is still on ice for when you get down to Little Creek

Can't remember seeing anythig before about retorquing. I am gonna get a closer look at the block today when I get it on the stand but it looks like the motor is a rebuild. So much for 263,000 on that one.
Yea Frank I know what you mean. After last night, could have used that cold one. (looking like June 9th-ish).
Now I just gotta do some sucking up to the wifey. After telling her what happened she wants the Beef replaced with something newer. (From the darkside! )
Had to explain cost breakdown per year. Even with the $800.00 plant would still be right around $3,500.. for total cost of purchase and repairs in one year. STILL less that her ride.
I am gonna get some photos posted in my gallery and over yonder for all to see.

Retorqueing was discussed several weeks/months back and was agreed to be a "Do Not Do" item. Quite often the bolts will rust or the threads adhere to the head threads which would give a false retorque reading. You certainly would NOT want to untorque then retorque as the bond of the head gaskets would be broken and probably leak. A search may find the post, Mel was in on the discussion too.

Thanks Pete! I'd been away when that one went by I guess.
Dog described some as actually being loose tho...so I'd think if one had the valve-covers off for anything else, it wouldn't be a bad idea to see if any are loose; and go ahead and tighten those...

Had 3 Head bolts that were only about 50-60 ft/lbs torqued when I loosened them up.
Anywho, got the motor bout ready to go in after switching oil cooler, motor mounts, injectors, GP's and IP.
