High all, I am new here and must say this is a great site. I have a couple of questions for you all. I have a 1983, and a 1985 6.9L, and also a 1990 and a 1991 7.3L and I have a crankshaft mystery. The 1983 6.9 and the 1990 7.3 both came in front of manual transmissions while the 1985 6.9 and the 1991 7.3 both came in front of automatic transmissions. I was wanting to transplant the 1991 into a truck with a T-19 4 spd just as I had done the 1990 model engine. Well, the 1990 engine fit the flywheel but the 1991 engine does not. I checked on all of my engines and found that the 1983, 1985, and 1990 all have the same rear crankshaft mounting surface and flange, while the 1991 has a larger diameter center mounting flange (2.05 inches versus 2.15 inches). I have read alot about these engines and read about alot of conversions between automatic and manual transmissions and this problem has never come up. Did I not read enough or is this some oddball I have. It is not a manual vs. automatic deal because the flywheel will fit the 6.9L that came with an automatic. Any enlightenment will be greatly appreciated, thanks.

My other diesel is a...

'71 VanPelt Pumper, Cummins 855 Turbo
There used to be a link here, to some useful IDI-diesel tech info; but it was chopped out by others, in a vain attempt to repress the very essence of the internet: linking!
sigh...
I put a mic on a 6.9 crank I have and came up with the same 2.050 . Why that 1 7.3 crank is different is strange. The only solution would possible is to machine the center of the flywheel to fit?
There is a hub on the 7.3 crank to adapt the automatic flexplate to it. The hub will pop off with a pry bar. The hub is only about an inch thick,if you look closely you can see the parting line between it and the crank.

My guess is that they used that "sleeve" to adapt the International diesel to a 460 flex plate. The auto transmissions (at least) use the 460 bolt pattern, which is what the heavy steel adaptor is for. It was cheaper to have the adaptors made up than to cast the few trans cases in the International pattern.

Glad you got your answer. It's good to see someone else who has a T19 on the back of their 7.3. I was begining to think I was the only one.
By the way, Welcome to the site. Glad to have you here.

Thanks Heath, it's good to be here. This site is a great resource for reliable information. Yes, I too am quite fond of the solid flywheel cast iron 4 speed - it's hard to beat.
