80 MPH @ 1750 RPM

That's right! I must be getting great fuel mileage!

This happened yesterday morning and this morning. When cold and warming up the speedo has been reading very high. After fifteen minutes or so in stop and go traffic the speedo reads correctly for the rest of the day. So, is the speedo electrically driven, and where would the contacts that may be corroded be?

Re: 80 MPH @ 1750 RPM

I've been wondering the same thing myself. My speedo jumps all the time nobody at the ford place knows why. It acts like its got a broke cable or something, but its electric. You find out let me know. Please

Re: 80 MPH @ 1750 RPM

well, the 91 is not electrically driven. You may have a broken cable or a bad speedomoter. The 92 is a completely different system. I can send you a working speedometer free if you think you can use it. If you are close I will help do it. About half an hour and you do not have to lose your odometer.

Re: 80 MPH @ 1750 RPM

Mike, if I had a bad speedo or cable would it only act up first thing in the morning and then be right on the entire rest of the day?

Mel, I'm in Baltimore County. I've seen your posts from Pa. You're not very far at all. There's a great little restaurant in Delta just across the Md.-Pa border. I'm up that way several times a year, if I know I'm going to be there ahead of time I'll give you a yell. John

Re: 80 MPH @ 1750 RPM

Is your speedo reading high, or is your tach reading low?

Re: 80 MPH @ 1750 RPM

OK, this is strictly for the people that will use it responsibly. I thought about doing a write up, but changed my mind.

1) Remove guage cluster
2) Placed cluster on workbench, facing up
3) Remove the clear plastic cover using a torx screwdriver. It's a T15
4) There are a few more screws holding on a black spacer. Reove these, and the black spacer

You should now have the back of the cluster in front of you, with 3 or 4 distinct guage panels visible.

5) Starting at the outermost one, pry straight up with a screwdriver underneath the face of the panel. These overlap each other, with the speedo being overlapped on both sides by other guages. There are no screws holding these on, just electrical pins. Most guages have two to three of these on the back.
6)With the speedo panel out and in you hand, you should be able to see a circuit board on the back, witha long computer-like cable that goes to the LED display. There is a plug on the back that is rectangular, and was unplugged when you took out the cluster.
7)Carefully remove all three screws holding on the circuit board
8) remove the clip and cable for the LED display

Installation is the reverse of removal, and the circuit board is what controls the mileage. You can actually drive with nothing in but this board, and the odometer will rack up miles. There will be another step for removal of the auto tranny indicator, but mine is manual and I do nto know where to disconnect this. Consult a manual for the removal of the guage cluster.

When this goes back on, your speedo may read 85. You do not have to remove it and put it back to 0, as it will move with gravity when it is out. Driving it to about 20 mph will send it back to where it belongs. I will try to take pics of this soon, but do not have a digital camera. By the same token, you can only replace the guage that needs to be replaced, instead of the whole thing. The whole process takes about half an hour.

Let me know if I can help more.

John, yes your close. Perhaps we need to have a mini meet at Delta Family resturant some time. My wife went to Essex community college for a little while. I know the area well.
