89 nails, and rattles and cold start-ups

My 89 F-350 4x2 all stock. At cold start-up it will sometimes rattle or I think what you call nail for about 10 -15 seconds. I do always use diesel kleen additive just for the extra lubraticity. Is every thing allright it has been running fine except just a split second squirt of ethyer at cold start. Have changed all glow plugs motercraft.

Does it fire when you first crank it the die?

If your GP's are good and the GP relay is working, your start problems might be a bad/slow starter, weak batteries, bad battery cables or terminals. Using starter fluid with a working GP system is dangerous.

I don't understand what you mean by nailing. I've been reading this forum for 10 years and this is the first time I have heard this description.

Like a boged down deep diesel rattleing sound. And like a uneven fuel flow for a couple seconds.

It probably means that your glow plugs aren't working correctly, and your too cold on start.

So what is happening is that it is rough at start for a second or two until all cylinders are warm and firing correctly. I had that problem in the winter when my GP's went kaput when I first got the truck. The warmer the days the better.

Sounds about normal for nearly every diesel I've ever heard, except maybe the newer ones with pilot injection. Until the prechambers & cylinders warm up enough to allow efficient combustion it's gonna be smoky & noisy. At -30F a 6.2l is as loud as a Cummins for a minute or 2.

So true that's what it is . I love these old deisels. When I just recently changed the glow plugs one of them had oil on it does that just mean that glow plug has not been working for awhile and had accumulated oil on it or some thing wrong with that cylinder?
