8v71 / 12v71 blower on a 7.3??? :) opinions?

Thinking about trying something new on the old 7.3 family of engines. My uncle does alot of drag racing and was wondering the other day if anybody had fitted a 8v71 or similtar blower on a 7.3/6.9 engine. what are drawbacks or plusses to this? let me know

i would have to say wow. If its possible I'd be interested in knowing how to do it. I have a COE with a Detroit Diesel 8V92 2 stroke diesel under it. I'll go lift the cab and take a closer look at it for ya. wonder what it would take to retrofit something like that to a IDI.

A lot and that's an understatement. The plusses---about zero.

Agreed. The 2-stroke detroits have blowers on them so they will run at idle...that's more or less the purpose they serve.

What About Like A Eaton M112? Would That Be Enough Boost To Make A Difference? Would Most Likely Be Easier To Retrofit?

cheaper and easier to add a turbo
and the boost of a blower on a diesel is used to keep idle not gain power
but 10 psi will be enough boost for these engines

If you think you have a way to hook it up, i can't see why it wouldn't work. Maybe i'm thinking of a different type of blower. A turbo would be cheaper and easier, but if your looking for a challenge, why not try?

If you think you have a way to hook it up,....
Therein lies the first problem. How are you going to adapt the 8"X12" (or thereabouts) rectangular flat blower outlet to the 5"+/- round IDI intake? Not to mention there's nowhere on the IDI block to drill and tap holes for the blower holddown bolts. Secondly, the blower is required on Detroits to provide air to the liner ports throughout the RPM range because those engines have no intake valves or intake manifold or intake stroke. It provides an astounding 5 PSI, it's not there for horsepower, and the power required to turn the blower rotors from a measly 185HP IDI engine would eat up any horsepower gains. On Detroits, the blower is shaft driven by way of an upper driven gear so dreaming up a way to drive it on a IDI would be an engineering nightmare in itself. What the dragster boys can do with unlimited money and resourses and what can be done in the real world to a pickup truck are two different things. Maybe someone else knows of some, but the only diesel I was around that had a supercharger for added power was the ancient Cummins 220s, and as soon as turbochargers were reliable, that same series of Cummins went to turbos all through the later years.
