93 7.3 wont shut off

I have a 93 7.3l in my 25 foot boat. Got the whole engine from a junk yard for $400, been running fine. This last trip, when we got back to the dock, the engine wouldn't shut off. I know enough to understand it's probably the fuel cut off solenoid thats stuck or bad. I even pulled the power wires to it..engine still ran. How do you change the fuel cut off solenoid? Anybody got a webpage or directions how to do this?

Re: 93 7.3 wont shut off

Hey Cajun have not seen you here since you installed the diesel motor.

I will send you the IP governor cover TSB which tells how to...... Next time if it does that use needle nose and squeeze the return line from the IP it should shut down........ better at a higher than idle rpm.....

EDIT: It could be the FSS or the metering valve stuck. If you get the click when power is applied or removed at the FSS it may be working OK. The metering valve may be rusty or gunked up.

Re: 93 7.3 wont shut off

Yes it has been a while, and the boat has been thru much. First engine I had in it was an 84 6.9l. Engine ran great until one return trip when it lost power badly. Went from a speedboat to a tugboat. Never could figure the problem out. I still have the 6.9 if anybody needs one for parts or whatever. Found a 88 7.3l for $700. Got it all checked out and put together. It ran ok, but not great like the 6.9 did. Unfortunately the boat sank for Hurricane Rita. The motor was under salt water for a week. Not wanting to take a chance, I found a 3rd motor in a junkyard for $400. It's a 93 7.3l which runs just fine. This is the first problem I've had with it. I sure do know where to go when I have questions though!
Theres a better and more current photo of the boat at http://cajun.webhop.net/images/boatallset.jpg

I understand what you mean about the click on the fuel cut off. Don't know all the tech terms, but plain english works for me. I know there has to be power in 2 places on the ip to make the engine run. I'll be sure to go back and test see if the click happens or not. Click=good, no click=bad.

Re: 93 7.3 wont shut off

Now if I could just find a turbo that would'nt break the bank...lol. Only problem with that is I'm not using the stock exhaust manifolds. The stock exhaust physically will not fit under the engine because of clearance problems with the interior hull. I'm guessing it would have to be a custom exhaust that goes upward instead of downward. Or maybe some propane injection eh?

Re: 93 7.3 wont shut off

Follow up: As per the directions sent by cdnsarguy, I took the top off the injection pump(the part that holds the relays) and replaced it with the same unit from another engine I have. Engine cuts off perfectly now. Kudos and much thanks. Caught 80 lbs shrimp last time I went out!
