Red face 94 7.3 Question

New to the website, and need some help with my 1994 Ford F-350 diesel truck.
It is not a turbo engine, also known as the Powerstroke. I do however want to make it a powerstroke engine. First, is the basic engine the same? are the internals all the same? Can the motor handle making it a turbo? My engine has 120,000 miles on it. Runs great, but not like a turbo model......
Second, if I can do it..... are there any aftermarket companies out there that sell kits to do it? Or do I have to find a donor truck? Thanks. Grants father

The blocks are similar but that is about it. You'd have to swap the whole engine for a powerstroke to get a powerstroke. Turbo versions arent necessarily a powerstroke (PSD). There were turbo IDI's. The PSD is direct injection and is a totally different design.

There are several companies that make turbos specifically for IDI's

I AM assuming you have an IDI since a PSD really wouldnt work without a turbo.

There was an idi turbo built from 93-94. There are several differences between the turbo idi and non-turbo idi besides the addition of the turbo, such as stouter anodized pistons with larger wrist pins, improved piston rings and Iconel exhaust valves.

There is a guy parting out a '94 truck that has a turbo idi. Do a google search on idi turbo and pick result number 11 for the link.

In 1994 there were two different diesel engines available, the 7.3 IDI ( with or without a turbo), and the 7.3 powerstroke. All Powerstrokes came with a turbo, so your truck must be a non-turbo IDI. To answer your questions...

IDIs and Powerstrokes are completely different.

You can add a turbo to a non-turbo IDI. A lot of people have done it!

Banks used to make a turbo kit, they may still be selling them. Bankspower - 6.9 & 7.3L, '83-93
ATS built the factory IDI turbo kits used on 93-94 trucks and still sells a kit. Restoring the layer structure...
Hypermax makes a kit. Hypermax - Catalog

Or you can find a 93-94 factory turbo IDI truck and swap all the parts over. A lot of guys will sell used turbo kits, too. This is definitely the cheapest way to go, but you never know what you might be getting. Good luck!
