'94 Turbo Diesel not running right

I could sure use some help. This is a '94 F250 Turbo DIesel. This is my first diesel. I bought it in 2001 and haven't ever had to do a thing to it exept oil and filters etc..

She'll start fine, purrs like a kitten but a times (randomly) it will hiccup sometimes it dies sometimes it keeps purring. It might idle for 10 minutes then all of a sudden hiccup.

After letting it warm up to operating temperature and she is idling normally you let the clutch out and try to go somewhere at around 1500 (random as well) rpm it starts acting like its starving for fuel. Replaced fuel filter and put some diesel 911 in it but no change.

I think it may be the injection/fuel pump. If it is, can anyone tell me where this thing is located and what it takes to replace one?

First things to check would be:

The pressure and output volume of the lift pump measured at the Schraeder valve on the fuel filter/water separator head

Check is the return lines, caps and o-rings

One other thing that seems to becoming more common is the seal on the filter/separator head where the fuel heater electrical connection is

if it is the ip pump it is on the center of the motor right up on top and right in front of the airbox.

if you arent mechanically inclined i would get a shop to do it as you have to make sure the timing is right.

but if you can decently work on motors then you can do it yourself.

once you figure out what it is for sure someone here im sure will email you directions because the haynes manual which is what i went by makes it much mor eof a pain then it really needs to be.

Hey guys, Thanks for the rapid response. I consider myself mechanically inclined as I do all the maintenance on my vehicles. But all my other vehicles are gas. I don't know s**t about diesels, but I think that is about to change.

This problem started last summer but not as pronounced as now. it might hiccup once or twice within the minute or two after taking off down the road. I think the cold weather has made the problem more pronounced.

Where/how/what tools are needed to check the pressure and output volume of the lift pump measured at the Schraeder valve on the fuel filter/water separator head

is the Schraeder valve the block on the drivers side of the fuel separator?

Return lines, caps and o-rings. What am I looking for cracked, split, blocked, collapsed?

Can you guys recommend a good manual for this engine/vehicle.

Do a pressure and flow test of the fuel pump at the Schrader valve on the filter header (FSS- fuel shutoff solenoid disconnected on IP). Remove the tire valve core and hook a hose and pressure guage on it should see 4-6 psi when cranking. Then do a fuel quantity test same place, should see 1/3 pint in 10 seconds of engine cranking, route fuel to a suitable container with a hose.
If there is a problem with the lift pump and you are changing it, ensure the new pump comes with instructions as to correct installation procedure if it is the newer model pump with the almost straight arm.

Sent you a PM.
