I just got this truck last week and ive been playin with it and doing some research. Its a single cab 4x4 f-250 with the turbo idi motor. I want to swap out the turbo with the upgraded housing ATS makes but cant seem to find much about it.... and ive heard with an intercooler you can almost run the IPs wide open. Im about to install my gauges to watch my EGTs but this week the truck is getting new injectors, return lines, and glow plugs. I figured while I have it torn down why not go ahead and work with the turbo?
Im going to put a 3" body lift on the truck so I have more room for the down pipe but what exactly are the advantages to the ats housing upgrades? Does anybody make an aftermarket wastegate actuator for these trucks?
If your truck came with the factory turbo then it is wastegated. I got the ATS upgrade and it made a LOT of difference. My mileage went up about 2 MPG with my heavy foot, will probably get better if I learn how to drive like the grandpa that I am . I also did the Hypermax "cowl induction" for better intake flow.If you click on the "pictures of turbo upgrade" link in my sig. you will see the ATS turbo upgrade and muffler I installed. Once there you should be able to switch "albums" to see the cowl induction.

I thought you were talking about a different turbo. When I did my upgrade I read about "tweaking" the actuator rod.... changing the length so that it will not operate until higher boost levels. IIRC longer is more boost...I haven't messed with the IP yet..

Well where exactly did you buy your upgrade parts and how much did the turbo parts run you? I dont wanna go all crazy and stuff with swapping turbos, just easy mods because im going to run a 3" dp and then straight 4" back to my 5" stacks so my egts should be pretty low. And like I said im going to have basically the whole top side of the motor accessable so I wanna do what I can.

I called ATS and when I mentioned this site I got a discount on parts, I talked to BRIAN. IIRC it was a little under $600.00 shipped. I did my own exhaust. the "kit" came with turbine housing, outlet housing and 3" DP. It does spool up faster and puts out more boost. With the free flowing exhaust I have I can hear the turbo "whine"
Did you notice any difference in mileage? Im runnin a 5-speed so mine will definately be different but I was just wondering what kind of difference you saw besides the faster spool and boost.
I saw about 2-3 empty. But that trip was about 240 miles at 70-85 MPH most of the time.. First real road test and I still like to have fun driving. Mine is A/T and I hear that best mileage/power is about 1800 rpm's that's like 56 MPH (4.10 rear end) here in Sacramento/Stockton/Merced valley you will get laughed off the road at that speed. The spool up is almost instant. My gauge jumps now as soon as I hit the FUN pedal.

Well im not exactly looking for mileage as much as I am overall power. A quicker spool would be really nice and more boost is what im looking for so hopefully I can call up ATS and they can set me up a deal i cant resist!! They are my only hope as far as upgrades besides hypermax and im going to fab up my own intercooler setup to save me hundreds and probably use a late model superduty intercooler. I think the biggest upgrade for me right now is going to be exhaust because i hate the factory down pipe so maybe Ill call up ats and do it all at once!
Hypermax makes an Intercooler but when I saw the price I decided it wasn't worth it. I like my 'cowl induction" and it feeds 4" tube to the factory filter set up. I put in a K&N filter ( no sensors to oil up). I am too busy working on other peoples stuff to do a lot of fabrication work. When you get the I/C done take pictues and post them.
I posted last month after my first camping trip with the upgrades. On a hill out of Oakdale , Ca. STOCK I ran about 20 MPH - same hill after upgrades same weight 35 MPH
