adding in overdrive?

I have a 1989 with the auto trans...not sure which model E40d or something to that nature. The mechanic for our company sent the tranny off to be rebuilt 6-7 months ago along with a rebuilt transfer cases. The tranny is nice and tight...it just needs a highway gear im tired of it revving all they way out on highway trips. Is there a way to add an overdrive to this tranny?

Re: adding in overdrive?

First thing is to determine what trans it has.

An E4OD is a 4 speed transmission, a C6 is a 3 speed. Those are the only 2 automatics available with the diesel in 89. A C6 will have a gear selector that reads D-2-1, the E4OD will read OD-2-1. Also, the E4OD will have a overdrive lockout button on the end of the shifter.

Re: adding in overdrive?

It is the C-6 then. It reads PRND21 With small shifter and no button on the end. And its a 3 speed

Re: adding in overdrive?

Hmmm I feel your pain as in (no overdrive) on my 1988. When I bought the truck (new) I come to find in (89) is when the OD trany was added .
The OD button I belive is where my AC button is located.
After 18 years and 170,000 great miles, a little late in the game for me to add a expensive Gear Vendor

Re: adding in overdrive?

I have the same problem on my 1988 F250. Since I don't expect to pull much with that truck, I think I will have the truck re-geared to something that will give me longer legs. I have 4.10:1 now and I want to go maybe as low as 3.08:1. I am still deciding. It is about $1000 cheaper to re-gear than to add the OD.

Somebody might suggest a ratio that is available and would be the best for a 4X4 with the desire to lower engine RPMs and to increase fuel economy.

Thanks

hweaver

Re: adding in overdrive?

There's only a couple of options, one is two suitch to a five speed manual. You can put a e40d in with its set of problems, or a gear vendor which costs around $2500.00. I have a C6 with a 355 ratio and I still only get 10 to 12 miles per gallon. I very seldom drive over 2500 rpms, which is about 60 to 63 mph. If you put very many miles on it you go broke putting $2.50 diesel fuel in it.

I have two vehicles, one with a GV and one with a US Gear (see sig).
The GV shifts automatically, is not designed for heavy hauling. The US Gear can haul anything your truck can pull. It is a push-button switch on the C-6 shifter, engages a bit hard, but is far more robust.
It also allows you to go into 4WD with O-drive. The GV locks you out of 4WD when it's in use.
