After 18 years on the OE Starter...

...it might finally be time for a new one.
Took 3 attempts to fire the truck this morning. Good long GP burn, but she was cranking a little to slow I belive. Even with 2-new batts!
Unless I try some thinner oil VS the 15/40
I sure would hate to trade in this starter (she's been a good one)...never one issue in 18 long years with a TON of starts on it

Re: After 18 years on the OE Starter...

my thoughts exactly! i just had to R&R mine & it only had 247k miles and 13.5 years on it!

you may try taking ALL your connections apart & cleaning, then greasing them

Happy Belated Birthday, BTW

Re: After 18 years on the OE Starter...

Just take it in to a generator or alternator shop and have it rebuilt. A full rebuild usually costs less than a $100 and my last one was only $42. It depends on what they have to replace.

All connections clean...Don't know if it's a good option having the truck down for a starter rebuild (right now) as...the Vette sucks in the snow

It is cheaper to have the starter rebuilt than to buy a new one or use yours as a core. You will have to way the options. I had my starter rebuilt and back in my truck in about five hours. Hopefully you can find a place that can turn it over the day you take it in. The rebuild only takes an hour and a half.

The only place around me that (I) would trust for a "rebuld" ia Auto Electric. Their usually very busy. when they did my Marine started I had to wait several days. (if) by chance they could give me one day service I'm sure it would cost much more $$$
But I'll call them anyway to check.

Just wondering how much faster the (gear reduction) starter from Auto Zone would spin-up vs the OE unit?

Re: After 18 years on the OE Starter...

the Mitsu i installed was a re-man & looked identical to the unit i removed. pic in my gallery.

spins VERY fast.
$140 + $50 core at a local parts house.

edit:
the OE starter i removed is a Mitsu starter, complete with the logo BTW.

Re: After 18 years on the OE Starter...

I am not to sure about the gear reduction starters from autozone. The starter I have is a gear reduction starter out of a Bobcat or some piece of machinery like that. This is what the guy who I bought the truck from told me. I thought he was full of [censored] until the Battery shop told me that I had a very good starter. Also told me that with the gear reduction I shouldn't have any problems for the life of the motor, that is unless I screw it up by being stupid. Gear reduction is nice and I would fully recommend it.
