aftermarket y pipe

i am pretty sure this has already been discussed, but does any1 make a larger y pipe for our trucks. seems kind of pointless to upgrade the rest of the system with no y pipe.

thanks
kevin

Re: aftermarket y pipe

Gale Banks does. The system is discontinued though... I found one on Ebay for about $350. It's called a stinger system. I think its normally around 700. Its an aluminized system. Its not so much that it is bigger (bigger of an exhaust system will create turbulance... unless your truck is putting out around 450hp) This system has a Y pipe that actually joins like a Y upposed to joining like a constrictive U shape. It also includes a (i think the brand is) Monster muffler and a chrome 4 inch tip. I think the system was a 3.5 inch system. It may only be a 3 inch, can't remember. Sounds and looks ten times better. Can feel a small diff in performance too.

Re: aftermarket y pipe

I put the stinger exhaust on my 86, except I put a 3" straight thru muffler on it. I picked up 1 mpg and some good power. The Banks y pipe and first section of the system are the only important parts of their system. Of the 3 improved Y pipes available (Banks, Auto-Jet, and Dynomax) the Banks Y pipe is far more steamlined looking. I just recieved a Dynomax kit for one of the IDI F450's we have. The Y pipe is a huge improvement over stock. Aft of the Y pipe, they supply a 4" Powerstroke system with a very small 4" muffler. I think it's going to be LOUD. We'll see, the guys are putting it on today. I think I may wish I bought the Auto-Jet system since it is all 3" and has a more reasonable muffler. The Dynomax is probably fine for just running around, but this truck weighs 15k and has 5.13 gears so it may get tiresome.

Re: aftermarket y pipe

If your feeling crafty I got a 3" generic Y pipe from carquest fleet exhaust and it works well. I cut the old Y pipe close to the manifold and slid the 3" over and clamped with an adapter. works well. total cost probubly 30 dollars.

Re: aftermarket y pipe

Flowmaster makes merge collectors. The one for 2-2.25" pipes into 1-3" pipe worked for me. It's about $40. Changed out the rest of the system to 3" stuff. This helped the power and mileage.
