what does the bowl on the air filter cover actually do and does the engine need it to function properly

It was used as a noise reducing trick. No, it is not needed. You can cut off the "soup bowl" and have it go straight in. Some claim a little more power, but no facts.

it cuts down on noise a bit & makes it harder ot remove the air filter. cut bowl out for more power & mileage the easiest & cheapest power boost around.

i've never seen any dyno sheets, but some people claim it helps marginally. i didn't notice any gain, but some folks say they do.
if it does any any power its just a few ft-lbs of TQ and maybe a couple of HP. i noticed more power by drilling a series of 3/4 inch holes in the side of the aircleaner.
