AIr flow 7.3 DI

Having a normally aspirated 7.3L with a K&N filter and a magnaflow muffler, is it possible to allow to much air flow for the intake? What I want to do is make a scoop just above the driver’s headlight (9in x 3.5in) plum it with 6in diameter into the intake, modifying it to allow that much air flow. What do ya'll think? Fuel is a killer 2.11/gal.

Good Idea!!
Document every step w/dig camera and post it here.
Be sure to get a good MPG figure before and after.

$2.11 for fuel!

I sure wish I could find diesel for $2.11. Out here in northern California, I saw it today for $2.64 per gallon.

As said above, share pictures when you do your air mod.

Re: AIr flow 7.3 DI

This should be interesting. I have been trying to visualize a similar set-up for my '88 4x4. I like the pics i have seen here for the one that hogs out a bit of the rad. support---no problem except I think I might get into some deep water and wish I had the intake up higher!!??
Also thought of a small cowl induction set up. Too much work?
Good luck. Want to see pics. Thanks for being the pioneer.

Re: AIr flow 7.3 DI

yeah, cowl is supposed to be a high-pressure area on a lot of vehicles. Was it Mel, or Zigg, who did some tests on that a year ago and confirmed it for our trucks? Can't remember...

Yes, I worry about water a bit...but I have to ford a creek twice every time I go in and out of here; and I've never had a problem with hit.

I suppose I'm counting on the air-cleaner to slow down the rate into the engine to something manageable without hydrolock...

My '91 has a water-drain in the bottom of the air-cleaner housing; which the '86 didn't have. I suppose that's to make up for the lack of deflector-plate in the intake horn at the grille...which the '86 -did- have...

With the size of my intake horn...if I ever do get the nose in real deep, I likely -will- hydrolock the motor...and cry bitter tears...

My other diesel is a...
Hydra 35-ton Excavator, 6V71T; Isuzu C201 genset;
'71 VanPelt Pumper, Cummins 855 Turbo

There used to be a link here, to some useful IDI-diesel tech info; but it was chopped out by others, in a vain attempt to repress the very essence of the internet: linking!
sigh...
