alighnment or shocks horrible tire lean!

ok been wondering this as i crawled under the truck. i backed into my driveway and i have about a half inch from the tire to fender and its never that bad. i was thinking alighnment but looking i saw nothing that can push the top of the tire out. the tire is leaning inward on both sides, horribly leaning. when i crawled under i looked at the bump stop and saw i could get about a finger inbetween the bump stop and the i beam. so i was thinking coil springs and shocks need to be replaced cuz they are old and sagging what do yall think? do yall think just shocks or just coils or is it a simple alignment. i dont think its alighnment becuase that deals with the tire lining up with the road not tire lean. oh this is only on the front end.

Jeremy, If your tires are really leaning bad after backing up and straightening out when driving forward, I hate to say it but new ball joints are in your future. If you plan on re-springing do it before the ball joints as you can adjust caster/ camber ( top in top out) by an accentric located in the knuckle above the ball joint to straighten your tires.

Re: alighnment or shocks horrible tire lean!

The front springs are just sagged (or broken), which on a twin I beam setup alters the camber setting (which is the wheels tilting in or out). The setting should be more-or-less vertical with the truck at its normal load. Normally, the TIB suspension is set with the wheels tilting slightly out, so that when loaded, the the suspension drops and the tires are vertical.

Replace the springs or put in a set of the air bags inside the springs. I'm a fan of the air bags, because you can get the suspension height just where you want it, and can be adjusted for different loads. You can find the in-spring air bags in JC Whitney or other fine retailers.

Of course, you should also check your ball joints for play. The lower ball joints tend to go out first, but should all be replaced together. Use Moog greasable joints. Do not use non-greasable joints unless you enjoy changing them. I had to hunt for the Moogs, the big box stores do not seem to carry them, since they are not "cheap". I got mine from a smaller local parts store.

BTW, shock absorbers do not affect suspension height. Their only purpose is to dampen suspension bouncing or cycling.

Because of the design, strange things happen when backing up. All of your measurements and inspections don't mean much when the vehicle is parked after backing up. Pull forward and allow the vehicle to roll to a stop without using the brakes.

Re: alighnment or shocks horrible tire lean!

Rooster, also check on the Moog web site, as they have a special variable rate coil spring for ford twin I-beam idiosyncrancies, there also used to be a twin shock kit for the front, if you were really have a problem with cupping wear on (if I remember correctly, been about 25 years since I was that involved in front end work) on the inner edge of the tires, but, the pictures on the moog site about the replacement coil springs are very informative/educational
