Hello everyone. Guess my 1993 E350 is getting old. I have a charging problem I believe. My amps light is illuminated on my instrument cluster. I disconnected the main battery and removed it. The smaller battery is new a year ago. I replaced the bigger battery with a new one as my charger was tripping out charging the old one at 6 amps charge.
I thought it was the problem but the light is still on. I connect a volt meter to the new battery which is in series with the smaller one. I am reading approx. 13 volts. with the engine off. I start the engine and check the voltmeter. Still reads 13 volts. I turn on the headlights, fan blower and check again. Still 13 volts. It's not moving so I am suspecting the alternator. Is there a simple procedure on checking the alternator or even the built in voltage regulator for a fault?
I have tried searching the forum on this with no luck. Any help would be appreciated.

On the voltage regulator? Is that the wiring harness on top of the alternator? I am sure the regulator is inside the alternaor, correct?
Anyway, I did wiggle all the wires on the alternator with no difference in the reading. But Thanks.

Stick a wrench to the back of it where the sealed bearings are (the little metal 'freeze plug' looking cap)...if it's charging the wrench will be magnetized to the bearing cap. If it's not charging, you won't notice the wrench pulling to the alternator at all.

The light goes out when there is a charge......... You could check the brushes for worn out......was it ever flickering before quiting, if so I would say brushes. If it OEM the brushes have probably worn grooves in the armature.
