another e4od ?

I have a 92 F350 4X4. The problem started with some shudder in reverse. The next thing I noticed was some hunt and peck for OD. Now as it warms up no reverse and slipping in fwd. Any ideas. Anyone ever changed the filter and fix these types of issues?

Thanks

Re: another e4od ?

A shudder in reverse is usually caused by the Torque Converter Clutch applying, which is caused by front pump internal seal leakage. (TCC lockup is mechanically locked out in reverse).

Once you have slippage it is usually fatal. I suspect that debris from the TCC has damaged the rest of the transmission.

Flushing and replacing the fluid may eek out a little more life out of the trans. I had an old gasser that had the TCC go bad and I had slippage going into 2nd gear. I used a "pressure riser" to increase line pressure and changed the fluid and got another 10K out of it (in a period of a few months). The trans still worked, I couldn't run it any more due to no engine oil pressure.

Re: another e4od ?

Well TCC slippage would throw a code. I suspect that the vehicle in question has a burned out bulb for the OD light, I can't see the trans slipping and not throwing a code and setting the light off.

I'm trying to think back to my old van with the burned up TCC. I don't think there was a lot of debris visible. But it's been a couple years.

Re: another e4od ?

I believe your 92 has the OD or TCIL (transmission control indicator light)is on the right steering column stalk. It will read OFF if the OD is turned off or flash if there is an E40D problem and possible code set.

Re: another e4od ?

The od light in the end of the shift stalk that is lit when the button is depressed to turn the od off/on is not out. and it is not flashing. Changed the filter and fluid yesterday. back to shudder when you first start to back up, all forward gears seem to be normal. I can live with that if it will stay that way. guess I need to find a tranny to rebuild. Any recommendations on what parts to use during a rebuild.

Re: another e4od ?

Well good to hear that the trans is working again. Get yourself a Magnefine inline trans filter to catch any additional wear debris and a "pressure riser" to firm your shifts and TCC lockup.

Magnefine: http://search.ebay.com/search/search.dll...ntrypage=search

Pressure riser: http://www.oregonperformancetransmission...egory_Code=E4O D

Re: another e4od ?

Just ensure the trans is UPGRADED to the newest specs, an old pre 94 trans just "overhauled" retains all the weak points.
