Antifreeze type

Okay so I've been going thru old posts since a bought my truck a few months back and I'm making good progress fixing things. I've fixed the GP system, replaced complete brake system and a few other minor fixes. This week I'll be pulling the IP and injectors for a rebuild. I need to service the cooling system. I've read all about SCA's and have purchased both test strips and DCA4. Question is what Antifreeze do I buy? I read an old post where someone said they used some type of Premium Prestone that didn't require and additives. Ideas? What does everyone else use?

Re: Antifreeze type

I used low silicate green for years........ I have used HD Prestone which I think has a precharge........but I still use DCA4 as required and test strips.

Re: Antifreeze type

Thanks. Went on Prestone web site last night and found the HD coolant. It does have a precharge. I looked at the list of where to buy and it gave all the local parts stores, The Zone, Adance, etc. Only problem is none of them have it. I'm going to try a few of the heavy truck parts stores tomorrow and see what they have.

Re: Antifreeze type

I'm currently using Texaco Extended Life Antifreeze in my truck fleet. It needs no additional SCA's for the first 480,000km or 6,000 hours and it's life can be extended for a total of 960,000km or total of 12,000 hrs with the addition of Texaco Extender.

Re: Antifreeze type

"Some" of the extended life AF isn't compatible with some rubber components in some cooling systems. IH & F don't recommend ELC in your 7.3.

Re: Antifreeze type

How about NAPA? (my favorite parts store). Their brand is low silicate, plus they have NAPA KOOL additive. That's what I put in my truck after the rebuild.

Re: Antifreeze type

Napa Green low silicate is rated for diesels and is fine.
