Any tips on removing glow plugs?

Seems as though mine have been in upwards of 150,000 miles and have found themselves rusted in place.

Re: Any tips on removing glow plugs?

Get ahold of a spray can of P.B. Blaster(great stuff) and spray around each gp and let it soak in a few hours/overnight. Good luck, OkieGringo

Re: Any tips on removing glow plugs?

The biggest key is patience, patience, patience, and a little finesse. THe biggest risk is breaking one off and off comes the cylinder head. Like previously posted, soak and work it a little at a time, they'll come out. Good luck

Re: Any tips on removing glow plugs?

If you end up breaking one or more off above the threads, use a drill and an "EasyOut" with more P.B. Blaster. Good luck. OG

Re: Any tips on removing glow plugs?

PBlaster isn't bad stuff, but if you can find it, get a can of Aero-Kroil ( they usually carry that stuff at commercial HVAC repair supply houses , I think the manufacturer also sells direct via their website) It's about $9 a can and worth every penny.

Soak the threads down good, and do it again a few times, let soak at least overnight, a couple of days if you can. It will make removal easier.

Yes, that Aero-Kroil is awesome stuff, just a little hard to get ahold of. OG

You can buy it direct from the manufacturer website at :
http://www.kanolabs.com/
You can even get a free sample can of one of their other goodies with an order.

A neighbor who owns a company that rents ice machines to motels turned me on to that stuff when I discoverd that I had left a threaded ball joint press in a bucket...filled with water..for 2 years It wouldn't budge no mater what I tried, liquid wrench, some industrial penetrating oil, air tools, 7 ft breaker bar, nothing. soaked it with Kroil and next day it came apart with hand tools and very little effort. Havn't used anything else since.
