argggghhhhh!!! wheel studs for a DANA axle ?

okay....long story short....... 1988 ford f-250 with some kind of larger dana axle (dually)....i am having trouble figuring out what dana axle this is.....it has what appears to be NO or possibly 80 in the diamond imprint on the lower right of the diff. housing and on the upper right (imprinted upside down is 40235 or 40236 .....

i need to figure out what size wheel studs to place on this beast because all of them are damaged badly and three have been broken off........ i'm trying to figure out what studs I need to get to keep those duallys on tight again...... the wheel studs that are on there seem to measure 0.5 inch and the lugnuts are 1 inch.... can anyone help me so i can get my baby back to work for me?

i'd also like to be able to have some clues as to what axle this is.....if those numbers and letters do not help....is there some measurement i could take that would define the difference between the dana 44 up to the dana 80 since the differential plates look so similar?

also...where the hell can i get the wheel studs i need?

can anyone enlighten me here?

Re: argggghhhhh!!! wheel studs for a DANA axle ?

Is it a dually axle or a single wheel axle with spacers to fit dual wheels? F-250's do not come as dualies.

Any F-250 through F-350 should use 9/16" studs. Factory lug nuts measure either 7/8" OD or 1-1/16" OD.

If this is indeed a Dana axle then it is swapped in from an older truck, as 1 ton and down used Ford (Sterling) axles from 1983 and up.

Re: argggghhhhh!!! wheel studs for a DANA axle ?

yeah....this axle is a dana from another truck (i wish i knew from where and what kind of truck...but the install was done before i ended up with the truck)...... the truck has been beefed up like this all over the place......and naturally i lost the printout i had that told me what axle it was specifically........ because i just didn't think i would be learning how to replace the lug studs like I am currently needing to do....... fun....fun....fun....

Re: argggghhhhh!!! wheel studs for a DANA axle ?

I'd knock a stud out and take it to the parts house. Any counterman worth his salt, with a catalog and a dial caliper should be able to get you the correct stud.

Re: argggghhhhh!!! wheel studs for a DANA axle ?

yeah....i know you're dead on with that....i was just hoping that i'd only have to start taking it all apart when i had the studs in hand....but then again....when does it ever really work out like that? sounds like if i want this one fixed and back to work i'm gonna need to do what it takes....thank you for your thoughts! Re: argggghhhhh!!! wheel studs for a DANA axle ?

Without knowing what the axle is from, you are just taking a shot in the dark. All of the domestic automakers used Dana axles, so it may not even be a Ford axle.

Re: argggghhhhh!!! wheel studs for a DANA axle ?

i want to say that the last time i looked at the sheet (i now misplaced) it was a DANA 44..... does that dictate the lug stud size (now i'm really showing my inexperience here....but i guess sometimes the only way to learn is to ask questions)..... the best part is....on that same darn sheet is the phone number (or at least the e-mail) of the guy who modified the truck....... chaulk one up for being disorganized....DANG IT! on a side note....someday i hope i can spend a bit more visiting this forum.... very cool to be able to talk to people who have the experience and knowledge to help me understand a bit more about a truck that really gets the job done for me (when it's not in the hurtbag that is! Re: argggghhhhh!!! wheel studs for a DANA axle ?

wait wait....hold the phone.... see if this rings true with you guys.....all this time i've just been looking at the diff. plate and the axle from the rear....i took a different angle.....and noticed clear as day towards the front right top on the other side the the diff. there is the numbers 70 .... would that then signify that it's a DANA 70 .....or am i just being too hopeful that the puzzle is a bit more clear?

Re: argggghhhhh!!! wheel studs for a DANA axle ?

you would be correct. all dana axles are stamped in the housing what size it is.

Re: argggghhhhh!!! wheel studs for a DANA axle ?

ok......now does that have a direct bearing on what kind and size of wheel studs are on those duallies...... or is that more dependent on the design of another part?

Re: argggghhhhh!!! wheel studs for a DANA axle ?

I'm sure Dana 70s, like all other axles, have had many different size wheel studs for the wide variety of vehicles they were installed in. Like said before, The best bet is to remove a wheel stud and take it in.
or take a lugnut off and take that in
or measure the wheel stud- the minor diameter (self explanatory) and to measure the threads you simply count the number of threads in one inch of the stud.

Also check the rotation of the nuts to tighten there should be a L..left hand thread or R right hand thread on the end of the stud. They go different directions so they will tighten on the stud naturally when going down the road.

How did they break did someone NOT know the right way.....

Re: argggghhhhh!!! wheel studs for a DANA axle ?

farm and fleet seems to have a problem (i only found this out after the fact from other people) of not tightening down the lugs very good..... and that caused a very loose hub......combine that with a heavy load and the time between a noise is actually detected while riding down the road in a naturally noisy truck....and bamm...three lost studs later you have a more interesting week to look forward to....... evedently someone had problems with the other hub too...becuase those studs wre messed up too.....so looks like i'm the guy who gets to replace them.....i guess it all worked out well....i could've just been steaming down the road one day with a load and find out what happens when tires begin to fall off......it's been a grrrrrreat couple of days!!!!!!!!!!! thank you for the info all..... i will begin the process tomorrow! (so i'll most likely be back here asking more darn questions soon)
