I've got a 93 F-250 4wd. And the factory auto locking hubs are not coming out of 4wd w/out driving for about half a mile in reverse. Does anyone know of an aftermarket brand of auto locking hubs or should I convert over manual hubs?

i have a PSD but i have 4WD and my hubs went out right before i bought the truck and the previous owner put in manuals. i love them. from what ive heard it is a very simple fix. mine are from WARN so they are reliable. ive never had any problems with them. i drov eon the freeway at 80MPH from michigan to my home in ohio (about 215 miles) after i bought my truck with the hubs locked in. thats a big NO NO but they were fine. auto hubs go out to much. my friend said that autos are the best because u dont have to get out to lock them in. we argued and he said that because ford made them they wont go bad. honest to god 2 weeks later they went out. now he has manuals from warn.
thats my two cents

I have manuals and recommend them. Went through two sets of auto hubs before i swapped, neither of which worked 100% of the time until they both completely failed.

you can drive your whole trucks life with the hubs locked, dry or wet, just keep it out of 4wd if its dry. the wheels need to be able to slip a little to avoid driveline wind up.
another vote for manuals. there strong and reliable. I lock the hubs at the start of the day if it's gonna be slippery and unlock them when it's not slippery any more. It's more convienient to me than having to back up a few blocks to unlock or pull it apart to repair.my $0.2

Sorry to be the odd man out, but my auto hubs have never let me down. They have always engaged when needed and I run highway speeds in the snow with them locked, probably have 20K miles all told.
I will admit I did have one side not unlock once, but that was purely my fault. I had done maintenance on the hubs and did not dip them in ATF as required and the one side siezed up and would not release. It was winter so I locked it back in and proceeded home 60 miles on a dusting of snow...dang cold too. There is good and bad in either of the manual or auto's.

I'd say this decision depends on how you use your 4WD.
I rarely use mine and LOVE the auto lockers, along with the elctric shift transfer case.
If your a serious 4X4'er, get the Warn Manuals, by all means. I think the auto lockers were made for peeps like me (& prolly 90% of the people that drive 4X4's), that rarely use 4 wheel drive.
The auto hubs just need a little maintainence. My truck has 200K miles on it and mine have never failed me. Keep um clean and properly lubed and they work fine
Have 260,000 miles on my factory auto lockers, never had any problems, I use them quite a bit in the winter and a little in the summer when im pulling my trailer threw are hay fields cause they tend to be slippery when wet with a 18" trailer loaded with hay, ill use them in a few other occasions too but like others have said, if you are a serious off-roader you still can not beet a good set of manuals.
