OK,
Just got in from pressurizing the coolant system. I run it up to test pressure and didn't have to wait the said 2 min. Got underneath and found my leaks! Both HG's front and back were leaking substantially along with the block heater.
Didn't bother with cylinder comp tests as wouldn't be right.
Here's my options:
Replace HG's for $125.00
Run to the motor city for one with 190k for $500.00
Found one 10 minutes away for $800.00 SCA cond unknown but says it runs from a totaled 1990 E series
Or pick up a Jasper longblock for about $3,000.00.. gota connection on this one.
Would like to keep the truck for another 10 years if possible as frame and underside is solid.
Question on R/R on the H/G's. I was told today that if I am burning oil now 1qt per ~750 miles that if changed out it will cause oil consumption to increase. Any truth to this? Spoken from a large truck mechanic.

You must have the hook-up on gaskets too. I can't find my prices, but I recall the valley pan being $53 alone. How your r&r-ing the heads for $125 I'd love to know

Got a good connection at Napa and he can get them for me at cost. I had thought about rebuilding the current engine till I saw my cost on the masterkit.... $1,828.00
Which leave block sleeving and head work up to bout $1,200.00. Found the Jasper option to be kinda enticing.
On the head R/R, it is just replacing the HG's. Typed out different than I was thinking. I haven't even tried to look that option yet. Have been told NOT cheap for good work on 'em.

Hey, if cost is no object, I'd go with the new Jasper out of the options you listed. No worries, full warranty. Yeah.
Fix it and be done with it is my philosophy. That philosophy has cost me some dollars since I bought this truck, but I've never had to worry about any repairs I've done breaking.
I'd like to keep my truck another 10 years, too... but would probably repower with a Cummins or see if DPS could build the IDI to provide the power/torque I want rather than buy a rebuilt standard 7.3 IDI.

I'd be curious as to what science he would exhibit to explain what surely is a myth.
Well, I’m not even gonna pretend that Roadmaster has as good a reputation as Jasper. But I tell ya what, I’m one of 3 on this board that I know of (I’m sure there are others) running Roadmaster iron. All I can say is, super easy to deal with, and a great motor so far. 12k turnkey miles. That sewing machine lights right off even when its 5° outside, and it doesn’t seem to burn a drop of oil between oil changes. Good power, and a good marbley clatter. It’s accepted the turbo and water injection quite nicely also.
My opinion is they are a good company out of the great state of Texas, and long block for $2,309.30. That’s the best price I’ve seen. Worth a look anyhow.

I asked why he thought that. He said that the new increase in pressure would cause the consumption increase.
HHHHUUUUUUHHHH?
I am hoping that for now, I can wing it on HG replacement. When I charged things up today, it was pissing up a storm. Didn't need to borrow the little ones baby powder.
