Depending on how many threads are trashed, and how much stud you have to work with, you can cut off the nasty threads with a ryobi and a cutting wheel. Sounds tedious but it works. I had to do that on my steering linkages when i replaced my ball joints. The very ends of the threads got screwed, just took an hour or so to cut em off nice and smooth. Nut went right on afterward.
Waynebo, I have one of those 'thread files'. It has saved my butt on several occasions. You should see the faces of the "locals" down here when I whip it out. They're flat out flabbergasted that such a thing exists. I can't recall where I picked it up but I'm always checkin' out tool racks and flea market tool bins. I have several tools that I have no idea what it's for, but I've got it . I just came across this poor man's impact driver for lug nuts. A derivative of a star lug wrench, but with oval weights on the two ends parallel to the wheel. The weighted arm slips over the shaft that holds the socket, and you swing the weighted arm back and forth and thus impact the shaft/socket/nut. I was getting a flat fixed on my dually when I saw the man pull out this tool. I just had to have it, they had two. My wallet just lost $60.00 US , but getting those lug nuts off is a whole lot easier now. And it fits nicely under the rear seat of the truck.Baja
Thread files aren't expensive ..I got a set (metric & std.) from Snap On there are 8 different thread pitches on each file ..Snap On also makes a light truck spindle thread chaser kit as well as seperate chasers of various sizes ..

trhead file i bought a file n a triangular shape is this what your talking about? i bought that and valve grinding compung. the guy at the prts store said if i can get the nut started throw some valve grinding compound on there and wrok the nut back and forth and it will cut its own threads. i thought about cutting it off, the messedup threads. i would have to cut just under a 1/4 inch off what do yall think?
