Ball bearing in the T-stat housing??

Changing the T-stat on my `88 F-250 and while cleaning the gasket surface on the water neck, I noticed what looked like a single ball bearing in the small hole in the neck (bypass hole?). I cleared out the gasket junk around the hole, but in the process, the ball took a flying leap into the abyss, never to be found again. So what exactly was it? And is it necessary? I checked with Ford and they have no listing of any type of "check ball" or other item that it could possibly be, and their picture is a "generic" one that is not specific to the 7.3L and does not show it. Anyone know for sure? I don't want to put this thing back together missing parts. Thanks

As far as I know... the ball bearing is definitely needed.

Go buy a new thermostat and gasket...

Re: Ball bearing in the T-stat housing??

It vents the air out of the block. Then when the coolant hits it, it seats. You could make it without it (I Guess) but I doubt it will warm up. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Ball bearing in the T-stat housing??

Been there done that, cost me a new housing from FORD. The part is not available seperately. Without it the truck was always cold.

Re: Ball bearing in the T-stat housing??

Carquest has thermostat housings, usually in stock, with the check ball. It cost me about $24 USD.
