battery ground wires ?

hello all,
i have a 94 idi. i have replaced all the positive wires off the batteries. it had been starting easy. the truck began being harder and harder to start. especially if it had been sitting for more than a week. i started looking for the problem and found the ground wires off the batteries to be very corroded. the engine block grounding strap had also been getting very hot when trying to start the engine. NAPA has some battery ground wires but they are smaller than what is on the truck now. have any of you guys gone to a 4 ga. wire for the grounds. i really don't want to go to the dealer for parts. they really stick it to you. thanks in advance for any help.

Re: battery ground wires ?

NAPA should be able to order you in some heavier cables no problem. Just measure how long you need for each side. What they carry in the stores is only a fraction of what they have available. When I ran a warehouse I would bring in parts off of 40 year old forklifts and they would match them up for me.....

Prolly the best starting improvement I've made to my truck.
The complete set installed, improved my starter speed by about 300rpm.

Re: battery ground wires ?

While I was beating up on a power steering leak, I found that someone had routed the ground wire on the drivers side battery right across the flanged coupling for the steering.
It had cut almost through.
I went to NAPPA and they matched it up.
Needless to say I replaced it, rerouted and fastened it down so that won't happen again.
Maybe some guys might want to check and make sure that hasn't happened to them.
